Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • To assist in maintaining high quality services for staff, students, parents, and community members who utilize the services assigned to this position.
  • To assist immediate supervisor in carrying out the duties assigned to that position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees the EL Program for the entire district. This includes: monitoring the identification and placement of ELs into TBE and TPI programs, managing program assistants, interventionists, bilingual aides, and ensure that schools are providing a continuum of services for ELs. The supervisor must also be trained in the administration of the WIDA Screener for new ELs.
  • Promotes and holds pre-service and in-service education training in assigned curricular areas. This includes:
  • Coordinating/providing the mandatory training of program staff in their initial year of service on best practices in ESL and bilingual education;
  • Training activities for all bilingual staff at least twice yearly; and
  • Providing at least one training session related to the implementation of the Spanish Language Arts standards for all Heritage Spanish teachers.
  • Coordinates departmental curricular revision, rewriting, and course distribution.
  • Acts as an instructional leader for the department teachers regarding curriculum, instruction and learning.
  • Leads the assessment process for the department. This includes:
  • Completing the on-line training for ACCESS testing;
  • Coordinating ACCESS testing at all four high school, Delta Academy and out-of-district sites; and
  • Administer ACCESS tests to students.
  • Assists in evaluating teacher and bilingual aide performance and confers with the principal regarding department personnel.
  • Advises the principal on the placement of department and ESL/bilingual teachers (course assignment).
  • Works with the principal on the recruitment, screening, and hiring of department personnel, which includes bilingual aides and/or tutors.
  • Works with Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning to improve teacher instruction.
  • Prepares special reports to teachers, the superintendent, and the Board on the status of regular and special programs in assigned curricular areas.
  • Conducts a yearly EL audit using multiple data points to determine program effectiveness.
  • Keeps informed on educational innovations and trends as they relate to department or EL program.
  • Participates in those activities that lead to continued professional growth.
  • Meets with other department supervisors to promote interdisciplinary programs.
  • Assists in identifying and utilizing community resources for the department/EL program.
  • Attends relevant schools, district, and professional meetings.
  • Informs the associate principal concerning general school equipment.
  • Prepares and administers the budget for assigned departments.
  • Submits Title III applications, service plans, grants and expenditure reports in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Maintains an up-to-date inventory of department/EL materials.
  • Manages the departments supplies, textbooks, equipment, and supplementary materials.
  • Plans, organizes, and presides over cluster and departmental teacher meetings for assigned curricular areas.
  • Approves all requests for attendance at professional meetings and conferences by teachers in assigned curricular areas.
  • Coordinates the work of student teachers within assigned curricular areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning.
  • Teaches as assigned.
