The Access to Medicine Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation, based in Amsterdam, that seeks to transform the global healthcare ecosystem by motivating and mobilising companies to expand access to their essential healthcare products in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The core pillar of our work is analysing how pharmaceutical companies and other essential healthcare companies currently address the affordability and accessibility of their products in these countries, and highlighting gaps, best practices and opportunities. To translate our research into real-world change, we engage with a wide network of global health stakeholders, including pharmaceutical companies, governments, international agencies such as the United Nations and World Health Organization, media, and investors.

YOUR SKILLS INCLUDE:

  • Writing quickly and crisply, to a brief, and incorporating feedback as needed.
  • Tailoring content to specific audiences.
  • Making complex ideas accessible.
  • Identifying the story and making sure it is powerfully told, across both text and visuals.
  • Editing others’ work to improve style, structure, flow, robustness, and/or argumentation.
  • Working directly with colleagues to help convert their insights and findings into clear pieces of communication.
  • Managing processes and projects from start to finish.
  • Proofreading to ensure text is error-free and in line with house style.
  • Working across multiple projects, with multiple stakeholders.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Essential: 3-4 years’ experience as a writer/editor, or other relevant experience. Relevant experience could include working as a journalist, publishing assistant, editor, content manager, in magazine journalism or in science communications.
  • An advantage: knowledge of global health issues and/or the healthcare sector and/or the pharmaceutical industry. A proven ability to quickly learn new topics is also an advantage.
  • An advantage: qualifications in communications, journalism or editing.
  • An advantage: experience using InDesign and InCopy.
  • An advantage: experience of working with researchers, analysts or other ‘content providers’ to develop editorial projects and reports that are visually appealing and excellently written.
Responsibilities

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

As Writer/Editor, you will focus on copy- and content-editing, including by developing visuals and layouts that support our messages. You will lead and deliver publications projects (for example, research reports), working closely with our policy experts and research teams to help shape and structure findings and insights into digestible texts. You will work on a broad range of texts and tools, from research reports and policy briefs, to headlines, web content, meeting reports and direct mails.
You will be joining our Communications team, reporting to the Publications Manager. Our teamwork style is highly collaborative, yet with clear ownership of different streams and projects. We work closely with colleagues at all levels of the organisation, including the CEO and members of the engagement and research teams. The Communications team plays a central role within the Foundation.

YOUR MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and deliver editorial projects. This ranges from smaller-scale projects (e.g., op-eds and articles) up to larger research reports (e.g., the Access to Medicine Index).
  • Copywriting and copyediting. This involves working across a wide range of formats, such as policy briefs, news releases, media pitches, news articles, web copy, social media posts, FAQs and direct mails. You will need to consider how to communicate the Foundation’s findings in ways that suit different channels, and to create written materials that meet the needs of different teams across the Foundation.
  • Bring reports to life via layout and design. This includes supporting researchers to convert their data into informative figures (graphs, charts, infographics, etc.) that tell a story and support their written findings. As the project progresses, you will work closely with a designer to bring content to life on the page.
