Description

Our indie media production / publishing company is looking for a part-time Writer’s Assistant to join our small but passionate creative team. This is an ideal role for a college student, recent graduate, or early-career creative looking to break into the independent publishing industry, specifically in the fast-growing world of indie comic books. You’ll work closely with our lead writer and editorial team to help bring our stories from concept to page, providing both creative and organizational support.
We want this to be a mutually beneficial experience. As our workload continues to grow, we’re looking for someone to help write, manage, and organize our ever-expanding list of projects. In return, we want to help the right candidate hone their storytelling abilities, gain valuable project management skills, and ultimately learn how to run their own business and make a living as a writer telling their own stories with complete creative control — the same way we do.
Success in this role involves helping ensure scripts are polished, keeping productions organized, supporting the creative process with research and formatting, and helping to maintain smooth communication between writers, artists, and other team members. This position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in indie comic publishing, with potential to grow into a larger editorial or writing role — including the possibility of developing and writing your own comics in the future, for additional compensation. This role also has the potential to become a long-term, full-time position, depending on how well we work together and how much our business continues to grow.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a sharp eye for detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Photoshop, Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.), and Kickstarter.
  • Must have Gmail, Facebook, and Instagram accounts for communication and networking with artists.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a creative environment.
  • A genuine passion for storytelling, with an interest in (or willingness to learn about) comic books and graphic novels.
  • Must have a positive attitude, growth mindset, and be highly ambitious
  • Entry-level position — no prior professional experience required, but relevant coursework, personal projects, or internships are a plus.
  • Must have your own transportation.
  • Must be local to Southeastern Connecticut (or within commuting distance) and available for part-time work.
  • Potentially assist at local comic conventions.
  • Must be comfortable with mature (18+) content.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with brainstorming and developing story ideas, dialogue, and scene outlines.
  • Conduct research to support story development, ensuring historical, cultural, or thematic accuracy where needed.
  • Track and maintain continuity across scripts and multiple ongoing comic series.
  • Format and proofread scripts to meet company and industry standards.
  • Prepare and distribute updated script materials to artists, letterers, and other production staff.
  • Help organize project files, schedules, and deadlines for the writing team.
  • Assist with preparing project materials for crowdfunding campaigns (e.g., Kickstarter).
  • Assist with campaign fulfillment, helping the team to package and deliver customer orders.
  • Help to oversee and manage the creative teams of various comic series.
  • Provide general administrative and creative support to the lead writer.
  • Help manage social media accounts.
