JOB DESCRIPTION:

The yard foreman/supervisor oversees all yard personnel and activities, including serving customers in the yard and maintaining receiving, unloading, and delivery schedules. They must supervise compliance with safety and fire regulations, etc. The supervisor is also accountable for all materials and equipment in the yard. The yard supervisor must safely perform all assigned tasks with sufficient speed and accuracy to avoid adverse impact on the level of service to customers and to achieve operating efficiencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Forklift experience is necessary. Lumber and Building Materials experience is necessary
* Ability to lead.
* Ability to work co-operatively in team atmosphere.
* Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
* Excellent communication skills.
* 1-2 years of prior retail experience beneficial.

Responsibilities
  • Must communicate effectively with customers, management, employees, wholesaler / manufacturer representatives, and delivery personnel.
  • Must read, comprehend, and interpret written and printed materials and information provided in numerical and statistical form.
  • Must safely operate equipment required for efficient yard operation, including lumber carts, forklifts, pallet jacks, order pickers, banding machine, ladders, radial arm saw, etc.
  • Must move throughout the yard to monitor activities of employees, assist customers, check inventory status, and verify the safety and security of the yard.
  • Must move materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Assume responsibilities for all yard activities.
  • Supervise yard personnel, keeping productivity at peak levels.
  • Supervise the service to customers in the yard.
  • Develop and maintain receiving, unloading, and delivery schedules.
  • Supervise the maintenance and safe operation of yard equipment, including forklifts, carts, table saw etc.
  • Keep costs at or below level(s) determined by Dealer owner / or manager.
  • Report out of stock items to the appropriate personnel.
  • Report surplus items to the appropriate personnel.
  • Supervise compliance with safety and fire regulations.
  • Establish / maintain / enforce policies which minimize waste and employ labour hours productively.
  • Bring actual or anticipated operating problems promptly to the attention of management.
  • Suggest rule or policy changes when you think such changes would improve efficiency, profits, sales, morale, and / or general operations.
  • Provide a good example for employees under your supervision by following company policies and procedures.
  • Acknowledge customers in a friendly manner and provide assistance whenever it is required.
  • Work on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.
