This is a hands-on, customer-facing role based in-branch and in the yard, responsible for receiving, storing and dispatching materials, supporting the branch team with loading and unloading, maintaining yard organisation and safety, and delivering excellent service to trade and retail customers. Working hours Full time permanent position = 44.5 hours per week. Typical hours will be Monday to Friday ranging between 6.30am - 5.00pm on a rota basis, with 1 in 2 Saturday mornings working 08.00 - 12.00. Main Responsibilities Receive deliveries and check goods against delivery notes, ensuring accurate quantity and quality checks and reporting any discrepancies. Unload and load vehicles safely, using manual handling techniques and mechanical equipment where required (training will be provided). Pick and prepare customer orders for collection or delivery, ensuring items are correctly packed and secured for transport. Operate yard equipment safely and in accordance with training and company procedures (e.g., pallet trucks, forklift where accredited). Maintain yard tidiness and organisation, ensuring stock is stored correctly and easily accessible to support efficient branch operations. Support counter and telesales colleagues with order fulfilment and customer enquiries when required, providing friendly and helpful service. Assist with vehicles and delivery rota coordination, liaising with the branch team to prioritise jobs and resolve issues promptly. Complete accurate paperwork and electronic records for stock movements, deliveries and returns in line with company systems and procedures. Comply with health and safety policies, wearing appropriate PPE and reporting hazards or incidents to management immediately. Contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on yard processes, stock management and customer requirements. Qualifications and Skills Previous experience in a yard at a builders’ merchant or similar operational environment is essential. A full UK driving License is essential for this position. Good practical skills with the ability to carry out manual handling tasks safely and efficiently. Basic numeracy and literacy with the ability to complete delivery and stock paperwork accurately. Good communication skills and a customer-focused attitude, able to support colleagues and interact with customers professionally. Ability to work as part of a team, showing flexibility and reliability to meet daily operational demands. Willingness to learn and undertake training (including forklift certification if required) and adhere to company procedures.
