Job Summary
Avalon Basketball is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Youth Basketball Coach to join our team for the 2025 season. As a coach, you will play a pivotal role in shaping young athletes by teaching basketball fundamentals, fostering teamwork, and promoting a positive, engaging environment. This part-time position requires availability for 1–2 practices per week (weekends or weekday evenings) and games/tournaments on weekends as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute high-energy, age-appropriate basketball practices for youth athletes (ages 6–17), focusing on skill development, teamwork, and basketball fundamentals.
- Follow Avalon Basketball’s curriculum to ensure consistent teaching of skills tailored to each player’s age and ability level.
- Provide positive, motivational coaching to build confidence and inspire a love for the game.
- Manage game-day activities, including coaching, supervising players, and communicating with parents.
- Adhere to Canada Basketball Youth Basketball Guidelines.
- Maintain professionalism, punctuality, and effective communication with players, parents, and program staff.
- Ensure a safe and inclusive environment, addressing the needs of players of all skill levels.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1–2 years of basketball coaching or playing experience is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, and strategies.
- Passion for youth development and fostering a positive, inclusive team culture.
- Excellent communication and motivational skills, with the ability to engage and inspire young athletes.
- Ability to follow a detailed curriculum and adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Availability for weekend/weeknight practices and weekend games/tournaments as needed.
- Reliable transportation to and from practice and game locations in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
- Experience working with children ages 6–17 is an asset.
- Background check required.
- First Aid certification is an asset.
Compensation & Schedule
- Pay Rate: $17–$19 per hour, based on experience.
- Schedule: Part-time, 4–10 hours per week, including weekday evening or weekend practices (1–2 days per week) and weekend games/tournaments as needed.
