PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE CRITICALITY OF THIS ROLE TO OUR ORGANISATION, WE WILL MOVE AT A PACE THROUGH OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS. INTERESTED CANDIDATES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY ASAP. THE ROLE WILL CLOSE WHEN AN OFFER IS ACCEPTED BY A SUITABLE CANDIDATE.

This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Bail Advocacy Program within the Children’s Criminal Law Practice. In this role, you will support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children and young people in the justice system by providing practical assistance and working with solicitors to reduce avoidable remand. Build strong partnerships with community organisations, government agencies, and justice stakeholders and:

  • Provide culturally appropriate support, referrals, and basic legal information to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children, young people, and their families.
  • Assist clients with practical needs such as transport to court, police stations, and appointments, and provide brokerage support.
  • Liaise with external agencies and follow up on referrals to ensure coordinated client support.
  • Attend homes and community locations to locate clients, deliver services, and support communication with legal representatives.
  • Support solicitors by attending court, maintaining client files, managing court diaries, and recording statistical information.
  • Uphold ALS policies, confidentiality, and professional standards, while demonstrating commitment to ALS values and the Code of Conduct.
