EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • ALA (American Library Association) accredited MLS (Master’s of Library Science) required.
  • Two years of professional public library experience or experience working directly with children required.
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • A valid State of Indiana Librarian Certification, Level 3 obtained within three years of hire as a condition of employment.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong public service orientation.
  • Knowledge and experience with technology, including integrated library systems as well as personal computers and mobile devices.
  • Knowledge of library materials and services appropriate for a variety of patrons.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.
  • Continuing professional development.
  • Work at other library locations as needed, or rotate to other assignments in an effort to promote professional growth and job enrichment throughout the organization.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Manager of the Youth Services department manages daily operations in the Children’s and Teen sections of the Main Library. Under the direct supervision of the Youth Services Manager and with an unwavering commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Assistant Manager will:

  • Help patrons at the youth and teen services desks. Assist children and caretakers with finding age appropriate materials. Provide resources to complete homework assignments and research projects.
  • Train, evaluate, and supervise Youth Services paraprofessionals and volunteers on a daily basis. Supervise the department in the absence of the Youth Services Manager.
  • Perform daily departmental procedures using a variety of library technologies and software.
  • Create and maintain departmental schedules.
  • Provide instruction to staff and to the public in the use of print resources, Internet, databases, and computer equipment used by the library.
  • Plan, schedule, and implement activities, programs, tours, and experiences. Actively participate in community initiatives and outreach. Provide training as needed on a variety of topics.
  • Participate in library initiatives, projects and teams as well as professional organizations and conference attendance.
  • Monitor trends in youth services and applicable library technologies. Recommend policy changes as needed.
  • Participate in the system wide selection of popular materials for children and teens including replacement and topical lists.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
