Description Summary: The J’s Youth Theatre KIDS is seeking an assistant director for its Spring 2026 production of 101 Dalmatians KIDS. The program meets weekly to learn material that teaches the foundational skills in auditioning and performing. The season ends with a fun show that sets them up for great success as they prepare to step into the JUNIOR Program. The Assistant Director will work approximately 75 hours each semester at a rate of $15/hour including 2 hours each Sunday for rehearsal/production meeting and additional remote hours for preparation. Rehearsals begin January 25, 2026, with performances the week of April 19, 2026. The KIDS Assistant Director should be passionate about working with young students ages 5-8 and enjoy presenting material in an engaging age-appropriate manner. The KIDS Assistant Director works closely with the Director and Producer to cast the show, plan rehearsals, and create a positive experience for the students. Responsibilities Understand the Director’s vision and assist with bringing that vision to fruition. Work with the Director & Producer to assign parts. Conduct rehearsals and performances in a fun and safe manner. Block the show and teach to cast. Teach fundamental performing skills to students (basic stage directions, singing, choreography). Along with the Director & Producer, ensure all materials are gathered and put away after rehearsals and performances. Ensure any materials that must be returned are accounted for. Know and understand all safety procedures of the J. Lead the participants in the event of an emergency. Attend all training and meetings as required. Attend all rehearsals and performances. Requirements High School Diploma or GED is required. Prior experience working with young children is required. Some prior knowledge in teaching songs and music to young children through the use of music tracks. Some prior knowledge in setting and teaching blocking to young children. Basic choreography skills needed. This is an excellent position for older high school/early college students who are wanting to build their resume with children’s performing arts education. Strong organizational skills. Patience and ability to deal with multiple priorities at one time. Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to use various online tools (Google Suite, Trello, etc)

Responsibilities

The Assistant Director will assist the Director in bringing the production vision to life, including casting and planning rehearsals. They will conduct rehearsals, teach fundamental performing skills, and ensure a positive experience for the young students.
