Zoo Worker Horticulture (Seasonal) Department – Zoological Hourly Rate: $11.23 - $23.87 Job Summary: Maintains and preserves horticultural and botanical features using sound horticultural practices; educates visitors; safeguards and enhances departmental assets; and ensures high‑quality service and product delivery—all of which elevates the guest experience at the zoo. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Maintain ornamental plantings: Flower bed and tree maintenance - Plant, clean, and maintain annual and perennial flower beds throughout the zoo grounds. Plant and maintain trees and shrubs throughout zoo grounds. Watering: Plants, mulches, fertilizes, weeds, prunes, cleans, and maintains ornamental annuals, perennials, turfgrass, and shrubs throughout the zoo grounds. Landscaping: Creates new and renovates existing ornamental and native planting areas through thorough site preparation, including invasive species removal, soil amendments, grading, and installation of hardscape features; operates hedgers, string trimmers, aerators, rototillers, and other small-engine landscaping equipment Event Decorating: Designs, sets up, and maintains seasonal and special event decorative displays and photo opportunities using live and artificial plants, props, lighting, and other elements to enhance the zoo’s seasonal and event functions. Grounds maintenance: Seasonal maintenance of zoo grounds, including snow removal, litter and trash collection, and leaf blowing. Other: Provides information and direction to zoo visitors, assists other zoo departments and guests, and performs additional duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Must be authorized to work in the United States Must be at least 18 years of age to operate vehicles and riding or landscape equipment Basic knowledge of relevant computer and software applications, including word processing and spreadsheet programs. Lifting/Carrying up to 50 (lbs.) Pushing/Pulling up to 75 (lbs.) Preferred Qualifications: Valid driver’s license WI DATCP Category 3.0, 3.1, or equivalent Pesticide Applicator License. NOTE: This original application is open to permanent residents of the United States. Appointee must establish residency in the state of Wisconsin within six months of start date and maintain such residency during incumbency. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
