The Department of English at the University of Southern Maine is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in English to start in the Fall Semester of 2026.
We seek applicants with expertise in British Medieval literature and culture. Candidates with strong additional interests in Medieval studies are encouraged. Such interests might include, but are certainly not limited to, any Medieval literature and culture external to Britain, and environmental humanities. We especially encourage candidates whose teaching experience extends beyond graduate school. Candidates may have the opportunity to work with other academic units within the University.
Responsibilities include undergraduate teaching of three classes per semester, advising of students, maintaining an active program of research and other scholarly activity, and engaging in university and professional service. The one course regularly expected of a Medievalist is Chaucer (rotation to be determined), and beyond that the new faculty member will develop Medieval offerings in the curriculum according to their own vision.

The targeted starting date for this position is Fall 2026 and will pay a base salary of $60,000 plus benefits. When hired, candidates must reside within a 90-minute commutable distance from the USM campuses. This requirement is essential for the ability to participate in supporting and building upon our university culture of “student focused every day” and allows for regular participation in on-campus activities, meetings, and fulfills the responsibilities of the role effectively.

Required Qualifications :

• Earned doctorate in English by the time of appointment (8/30/2026).
• Evidence of strong college teaching.
• Teaching beyond the graduate school level is desirable.
• Demonstrated potential for ongoing publication.
