Description

Remote Consultation Bank – Advanced Practitioners in Urgent and Primary Care
The Scottish Ambulance Service is at the frontline of the NHS in Scotland, responding to over 600,000 emergency calls a year, we provide an emergency Ambulance Service to a population of over 5 million people, across the mainland and island communities.
We are committed to developing a workforce capable of delivering the highest levels of quality service and clinical, person-centred care, in line with Scottish Ambulance service and NHS Quality Strategy.
We are currently accepting applications to undertake the role of Remote Consultation Bank - Advanced Practitioner (Urgent & Primary Care), from qualified applicants who meet the SAS criteria for the Urgent and Primary Care role.
This is an opportunity to support our growing team of Advanced Paramedic Practitioners and Advanced Nurse Practitioners within SAS and continue to build upon the success of the Advanced Practice programme. Since its development at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Remote Consultation by Advanced Practitioners within SAS has proven to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time, in the right place. This may be signposting to partner organisations better suited to their needs, referral to established community pathways, a face-to-face assessment by an ambulance colleague or self-care advice given by phone or video link. It has been effective in reducing the number of hospital admissions from 999 calls, as well as providing an extra layer of patient safety for those patients identified as deteriorating and who require an immediate ambulance attendance. This post offers the opportunity to support the Remote Consultation aspect of the rotational model for Advanced Practitioners within SAS.
Advanced Practitioners (AP) in Urgent & Primary Care undertake a dynamic role providing high-level, independent decision-making, including assessment, diagnosis, management, and treatment including prescribing, of patients with complex multidimensional needs. The role of the Remote Consultation Bank Advanced Practitioner will be to provide virtual patient consultation and professional support for other clinicians on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Operating at this level, the AP will possess a wide-ranging breadth of knowledge and understanding in addition to evidence of critical thinking, patient assessment and clinical care. Delivery of this advanced level of care will be supported by a scope of practice beyond what is currently required for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Paramedic or registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Nurse.
Applicants will be an HCPC registered Paramedic or NMC registered Nurse, have a minimum of SCQF level 11 Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Practice (including V300 prescribing) and have evidence of completion of an appropriate Advanced Practice Competency Framework. In addition, you will have a significant and demonstrable level of clinical practice and ongoing employment within primary/urgent/emergency care, including 1 year at an Advanced Practice level.
For successful qualified candidates, hours will be offered on an ad-hoc basis and will be paid at the hourly rate for the relevant point on Band 7. This bank post is specifically for the Remote Consultation aspect of the Advanced Practitioner in Urgent and Primary Care role. Some elements of the job description will therefore not be part of this role.
Applicants are advised to read all the supporting documentation prior to applying. The reflective learning statement should be completed by all applicants
Please note, you will be required to undertake an assessment day. Full details of assessment will be provided prior to the day. Assessment and Interviews will be held by MS Teams on 23rd and 24th of September 2025.
Start dates and an induction plan will be negotiated with successful candidates on an individual basis. This will include 2 days for IT systems training and remote consultation training shifts to be held on 23rd and 24th of October 2025 and 4th and 5th of November 2025.
Informal enquiries are encouraged and should be directed to the Advanced Practice Clinical Duty manager via the shared email inbox - sas.apcdm@nhs.scot or to Claire Blaikie, Integrated Clinical Hub Manager Claire.Blaikie2@nhs.scot
When applying, make sure to add the area (North, East, or West) in your email subject line and mention the nearest Ambulance Station to your home.
To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service.
As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre-settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, please refer to the GOV.UK website here.
Please note that SAS is NOT licensed to issue certificates of sponsorship under current UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship to work with us.
NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
