Description
Company Description Ramboll is ranked a Top 10 consultant in the UK and has around 2,000 bright minds working across multiple offices to apply their passion to deliver innovative solutions across Buildings, Transport, Environment & Health and Energy. We love seeing our talents develop and succeed and you will have opportunities to work on challenging and inspiring projects within an environment that is friendly, open and supportive. Job Description Bring your mechanical building‑services design expertise to Ramboll’s UK Healthcare team and help deliver sustainable, future‑ready healthcare projects across the UK and overseas. You’ll work on a varied portfolio — from major new‑build hospitals to refurbishment programmes and decarbonisation interventions — developing resilient, adaptable and low‑carbon mechanical solutions. You will combine strong technical design skills with excellent communication and stakeholder engagement to guide projects through all stages, from feasibility to handover. This role is for a hands‑on, design‑focused engineer who wants technical ownership, client contact and the opportunity to influence sustainable healthcare environments. Your new role As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer in Ramboll’s UK Healthcare team you will deliver mechanical building‑services design and technical leadership across a portfolio of healthcare projects in the UK and internationally. You will combine hands‑on design delivery with client engagement, team mentoring and project management to develop resilient, low‑carbon and adaptable mechanical solutions. We offer flexible working arrangements with candidates able to work from any of our primary offices as well as home. We have an exciting range of ongoing projects including Hillerød Hospital Denmark, Cambridge Children’s Hospital, Kettering General Hospital and KEMH, Falklands Islands. Key responsibilities Deliver mechanical building‑services design from feasibility to handover, ensuring compliance with UK healthcare standards. Develop resilient, low‑carbon and adaptable mechanical concepts and detailed designs; produce and review calculations, specifications and drawings. Lead MEP coordination and digital delivery using Revit (BIM 360) and industry tools (e.g., Hevacomp, MagiCad, IES). Coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and specialist sub‑consultants (architects, structural, electrical, public health, QS). Mentor and develop junior mechanical engineers and technicians. Act as client‑facing technical resource: present designs, attend project meetings and build strong client and contractor relationships. Manage project scope, resources and delivery as mechanical/MEP project lead, identifying and mitigating technical and commercial risks. Promote Ramboll’s profile through high‑quality deliverables and by contributing to proposals and technical inputs. Embed best practice in sustainability, quality assurance and continuous improvement. Key deliverables Deliver projects to agreed budget, programme and quality standards. Maintain clear, collaborative relationships with design teams and stakeholders. Coordinate design outputs and ensure high‑quality deliverables. Deliver safe, sustainable and commercially viable mechanical solutions. Your new team Join a growing, national Healthcare team delivering an ambitious five‑year strategy. Our multidisciplinary group works across long‑term programmes and high‑profile new‑build acute hospitals, delivering projects that improve patient care and strengthen NHS services. Why join us Meaningful impact: work on projects that directly benefit patients, staff and communities. Varied portfolio: from estate renewals and long‑term programmes to major hospital new builds and decarbonisation interventions. Collaborative and design‑driven: partner with leading UK and international architects and specialist consultants in a culture inspired by Ramboll’s Scandinavian design heritage. Career development: clear progression routes, chartership support and opportunities to grow technically or into client and programme leadership. Flexible working: national footprint with the option to be based at any UK office and hybrid working as standard. About you Demonstrable track record delivering mechanical building services design on UK projects — ideally healthcare or other high‑resilience/technically complex schemes. Proven technical or project leadership with experience coordinating design teams and driving a collaborative, inclusive culture. Degree (or equivalent) in mechanical/building services engineering or a related discipline. Eligibility for, or progress towards, corporate membership (MCIBSE, MIMechE or MIHEEM) — Ramboll provides chartership support. Strong competence in digital design delivery (Revit/BIM 360) and familiarity with MEP analysis/design tools (e.g., Hevacomp, MagiCad, IES). Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and to identify and mitigate technical and commercial risks. Clear, confident communicator able to explain complex technical concepts to clients and multidisciplinary teams, verbally and in writing. Self‑starter who can work autonomously across technical aspects of mechanical engineering while building client relationships. We welcome applications from candidates at different career stages. If you don’t meet every bullet but have the right aptitude and passion, please apply — we value potential and will support your development. We’ll support your ongoing development and chartership, and we’re looking for a senior mechanical design engineer who can lead technical delivery and client engagement on complex healthcare projects. What we can offer you Investment in your career development Leaders you can count on, guided by our Leadership Principles Be valued for the unique person you are Never be short of inspiration from colleagues, clients, and projects The long-term thinking of a foundation-owned company Be at the forefront of the use of digital tools Flexible work environment 27 days annual leave plus bank holidays Matched pension contributions A host of subsidised benefits including private medical insurance and cycle-to-work Why join our Healthcare team Join a growing, high‑impact team where you’ll develop technical expertise, run your own projects and influence our five‑year strategy. You’ll work on varied, high‑profile hospital programmes and collaborate with international colleagues to share best practice and innovative, patient‑centred design solutions. Real responsibility: lead projects and multi‑disciplinary teams with visible impact on patient care. Career growth: chartership support, dedicated CPD and paths into technical or client leadership.
