The Bowen Island Dog Ranch is Greater Vancouver’s professional dog boarding and training destination, devoted to giving dogs everything they need to be happy, healthy and safe while in our care.
Position: Junior Dog Handler
Start date: Immediate
Schedule: Part-time and full-time positions available.
Half Day: 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Full day: 7:30 am – 4:30 p.m.
(8 am start weekends & holidays)
Must be available Sundays, and weekdays based on the business needs. We work around all the staff’s personal schedules as best we can. Our peak season is Summer, Xmas, March Break and long weekends. Some work over Xmas and holidays will be expected.
Location: Bowen Island Dog Ranch, 1302 Adams Road, a 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver. Transit bus available on Bowen in commuter hours that drops off at the Dog Ranch property.
Wage: $17.85 - $22/hour, based on previous work experience, and dog care experience. We will train how to handle dogs, but you must have a deep love of dogs and all that they are.
Job Description: Junior Dog Handlers help provide professional, loving care and exercise to the dogs staying at the Dog Ranch. Dog handlers report to the Manager directly, Senior Dog Handlers and Administrators. Can move into a Senior Handler, training or other role in time.
We’re looking for dog lovers who are comfortable around dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages. As part of a team environment, you will help create a positive, happy, healthy, stress-free environment for the dogs.
Previous Experience: Accommodation: Temporary accommodation available for the right applicant.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES (OVERSEEN BY A SENIOR HANDER):
· Learn and understand the Dog Ranch’s online user-friendly kennel software, that ensures all the dog’s food, health, and behaviour issues is overseen efficiently and reported appropriately, and be able to navigate the daily reservations of the dogs arriving and departing.
· Be able to multitask and have a sharp attention to detail.
· Be able to identify any risks to the dogs, staff or the business from a safety perspective, and document and report in detail with clear communication.
· Physically handle dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages.
· Ability to lift 50lbs/23kg easily.
· Be able to work in the BC rainforest on a hilly terrain in the rain, mud, sleet, ice and snow.
· Good written and verbal communication with a positive solution-based attitude, helping create a work environment that functions as a team, and is positive and free of conflict or distraction.
· Have a professional attitude.

· Help oversee and exercise the dogs in packs outdoors, providing mental enrichment with direct positive engagement, including brain games and activities.
· Help feed the dogs
· Clean the dog’s room and facilities, laundry, dishes, sweeping and mopping floors, disposing of garbage and poop bags, restocking inventory etc.
· Helping organize the arrival and departure of the dog’s property
· Minor upkeep around the facility
· Helping oversee the daily health checks on each dog from nose to tail.
· Communicate with our valued clients with the highest level of customer service.
