Position Summary Under the direction of the Main Campus Associate Director of Life Safety Services and Compliance, the Assistant Fire Marshal is responsible for assisting in the planning, organizing, and conducting fire prevention and fire investigation programs for the Main Campus. This position provides expertise to the University in support of the facilities' fire protection and prevention operation, and attends to various technical or mechanical duties. The Assistant Fire Marshall helps perform a variety of administrative, technical, and supervisory work related to fire inspection and prevention, such as scheduling, supervising, and conducting inspections of existing structures and construction sites for compliance with fire codes; resolving compliance problems within the scope of knowledge and authority; reviewing construction plans; and conducting fire drills. This position requires contact with representatives of local, state, and federal agencies, including the City of Philadelphia, as well as the general public. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Details * This position requires the following background checks: Department of Motor Vehicle background check. * This position is 100%25 ONSITE. * Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed, Monday-Friday, to allow for early morning, evening, or weekend appointments, training, or meetings. Required Education and Experience * Bachelor’s degree. * At least three (3) years of directly related experience as a full-time Firefighter or Fire Code Enforcement Official. * Experience in Fire Science, Fire Inspection and Investigation, or Fire Protection Engineering. * Previous experience in public fire education, fire cause determination, fire service instruction, fire code enforcement, or emergency preparedness training. * Successful completion of updated Fire Code/Fire Inspection classes within the last three years. * Must have International Code Council Fire Inspector II certification. * An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Required Skills and Abilities * Knowledge of NFPA codes, International Fire Code, International Building codes, and County codes relating to fire regulations. * Must have working knowledge of the reasons and intent of fire code requirements, as well as a working knowledge of building construction and fire protection systems. * Must have excellent reasoning and critical thinking skills with an ability to generate appropriate solutions. * Must have excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise memos, reports, and other documentation. * Ability to work independently and organize many projects simultaneously, and prioritize work. * Must be proficient in the use of a working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel and Word. * Must be able to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action, especially under conditions that may at times be psychologically and emotionally stressful. * Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position and be able to conduct occupancy inspections, annual hazard inspections, fire flow tests, and fire protection system tests as necessary.
