THE OPPORTUNITY:

Tetra Tech is adding a Civil Engineer-In-Training to our Arctic Engineering Practice based in Edmonton, AB. As a Civil Engineer-in-Training with our Arctic Engineering Practice, you will work under close guidance and supervision on tasks and smaller projects and will be an active team member on larger projects under the guidance of senior staff. Your Role:

  • As a Civil Engineer-in-Training, you will work under the guidance and supervision of senior staff on civil, mining, oil and gas, remedial, and transportation projects across northern Canada.
  • Perform fieldwork in support of data collection for engineering design, including field reconnaissance, geotechnical site investigations, and site inspections, usually with a focus on permafrost soils and thaw potential.
  • Conduct onsite construction monitoring and QA/QC for northern civil, mining, and transportation projects.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Undertake engineering analyses under the guidance of senior staff for earth dams/dykes, infrastructure foundations, mine waste structures, and road embankments.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, including daily field reports, technical memorandums, and engineering reports, to summarize data collection, analyses, and design work.
  • Develop presentations for clients and communicate design and task progress with senior staff and project managers.
  • Communicate and coordinate internally with other engineering disciplines, project managers, GIS specialists, drafting technologists, and administrative staff related to task activities.
  • Deliver individual project tasks within project schedule and budget in accordance with internal procedures, government legislation, and industry best practices.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Geological Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training with APEGA, NAPEG, and/or Engineers Yukon, or the ability to obtain registration within six (6) months.
  • Basic understanding of relevant areas of civil engineering, including technical drawings through planning, design and construction.
  • Strong technical writing skills applicable to daily field reporting, design memos, and engineering reports.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and Word.
  • Familiarity with applicable design software including AutoCAD Civil3D and Seequent GeoStudio.
  • Relevant work experience on engineering projects in northern Canada or with permafrost soils is considered an asset.
  • Experience with slope stability analysis or thermal modelling is considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize work, and take direction from senior staff and project managers.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing onsite fieldwork at remote locations often with limited communications and offsite support; and
  • Comfortable travelling for fieldwork across northern Canada, including the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon Territory, to undertake fieldwork at remote locations prone to unforeseen travel delays and schedule changes.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) with a good driving record.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
