Description
About Moment Energy Independent energy is here. Help us deploy it. Energy should be free. Free from aging grids, fragile supply chains, and unnecessary extraction. At Moment Energy, we’re building a world where clean power is abundant, affordable, and uninterrupted for everyone. The world doesn’t need another promise about energy; it needs proof that a freer future is possible. Moment Energy is the pragmatic liberator of power, the only company certified to turn the largest untapped energy supply into independent energy. Now is the moment. While the industry scraps millions of batteries with decades of life left, we put them to work by repurposing large-format batteries into advanced battery energy storage systems that deliver real-world impact. We were told second-life batteries would never be safe enough or scalable enough. We didn’t argue, we engineered the solution. Today, Moment Energy delivers 5x the energy density and holds the certifications required to deploy energy independence at scale. Now is the moment. Join us. The Role We are looking for a Lead Test Engineer to build and lead Moment Energy’s testing and validation capabilities. This role is responsible for defining and executing the testing strategy that ensures the safety, reliability, and performance of our battery energy storage systems (BESS). As a technical leader, you will guide the development of test infrastructure, test methodologies, and validation processes across R&D, product development, and certification activities. While you will lead the testing function, this role remains highly hands-on. You will spend significant time in the lab with your team designing experiments, building complex test setups, and analyzing system performance. You will work closely with the test engineering team, electrical, mechanical, firmware, and manufacturing teams to validate new designs, investigate failures, and support certification testing. Your work will directly influence product reliability, safety, and time-to-market as we scale our energy storage systems. If you enjoy building testing systems from the ground up, solving complex engineering problems, and leading a critical function in a fast-growing clean technology company, this role is for you. Responsibilities and Duties Testing Strategy & Leadership Own and lead Moment Energy’s testing and validation strategy across R&D, product development, and certification. Develop and maintain comprehensive test frameworks covering component, subsystem, rack, and full BESS-level validation. Establish testing standards, methodologies, and best practices across the engineering organization. Mentor and guide Test Engineers, providing technical leadership and support on complex testing activities. Collaborate closely with engineering teams to define validation plans for new products, features, and design changes. Test Infrastructure & Lab Development Design, build, and scale advanced test infrastructure for battery modules, racks, and full BESS systems. Lead the development of automated testing systems, data acquisition infrastructure, and long-duration reliability testing capabilities. Oversee lab safety procedures and ensure safe operation of high-voltage testing environments. Maintain and improve lab equipment, including battery cyclers, DAQ systems, power supplies, and instrumentation. Testing & Validation Design and execute complex test plans for product validation, certification, R&D investigations, and lifecycle testing. Build and oversee advanced test setups involving high-voltage DC and AC systems (up to 1000VDC, 600VAC). Operate battery cyclers to conduct testing on cells, modules, racks, and full BESS units. Develop custom test fixtures and experimental setups to evaluate new concepts and investigate failure modes. Support certification and compliance testing, including pre-compliance testing and coordination with certified test labs. Data Analysis & Reporting Develop automated test scripts and tools to streamline testing and data collection. Analyze large test datasets using Python or similar tools to identify performance trends, reliability issues, and failure mechanisms. Produce clear reports and presentations summarizing results and engineering recommendations. Work with cross-functional teams to translate test results into actionable design improvements. The Candidate We’re looking for individuals with the following traits, skills, and experiences: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline. 6+ years of experience in hardware testing, validation, or verification roles. Strong experience designing and executing complex engineering test plans and validation programs. Demonstrated experience working safely with high-voltage DC and AC systems. Deep experience building electro-mechanical test setups, wiring instrumentation, and configuring test equipment. Experience with data acquisition systems (DAQ), instrumentation, and test automation. Strong data analysis capabilities using tools such as Python, MATLAB, or similar environments. Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor engineers in a collaborative environment. Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to investigate complex system failures. Previous experience in a high-growth fast-paced environment is highly desired. Nice-to-Have Experience: Experience testing lithium-ion battery systems, battery modules, or battery energy storage systems. Familiarity with battery cyclers and battery management systems (BMS). Knowledge of battery and energy storage safety standards such as UL1973, UL9540, and related compliance frameworks. Experience with industrial communication protocols such as CAN, Modbus, or SCPI. Experience testing power electronics, inverters, and grid-connected energy systems. Why join us? Today, we’re delivering 5x the energy density and have all the certifications needed to ship energy independence to the world. Be part of a mission-driven company focused on creating sustainable energy solutions and making a positive impact on the world. Collaborate closely with passionate co-founders and a team committed to innovation and excellence. Safety is our Foundation We prioritize the safety of our products, customers, employees, and the general public above all else. From the workshop to the field, we maintain the highest standards for our batteries in testing manufacturing and deployment, and daily operations. Safety is not only about procedures—it is about vigilance, responsibility, and speaking up when something does not feel right. Safety is everyone's responsibility. We follow safety protocols, use proper equipment, and continuously improve our systems to prevent risks before they occur. If something is unsafe, we stop work and address it. Safety also means protecting our colleagues, customers, and communities by designing reliable products, maintaining safe workspaces, and ensuring our work is done carefully and responsibly. We’re Building a Greener Future Together: We infuse passion for our cleantech mission into every aspect of our work and incorporate fun into the workplace. We motivate one another, celebrate our successes and embrace eco-friendly practices to reduce our carbon footprint. We Prioritize our Customer’s Needs: We place our customers at the core of everything we do, ensuring that every decision considers their needs and aims to provide increased value to them. We provide reliable support for our customers, every step of the way. We’re Open, Honest and Accountable: We prioritize open and honest communication to foster mutual understanding, strengthen knowledge sharing, and reduce miscommunication within the team. We admit when we’ve made a mistake, and remedy our actions. We transparently communicate outcomes whether good, bad, or unexpected. We Think and Act like Owners: We’re self-starters that proactively embrace new challenges along with personal and collective ownership of responsibilities in the organization. We focus on growth, not titles, and we do what needs to be done. We Treat Everyone with Respect: We actively listen, share openly, and work together towards common goals. We treat one another with mutual respect to cultivate an inclusive environment where everyone feels accepted, supported, and heard. We keep an open mind and are willing to learn.
