The Role and Department The Department of Management and Marketing at Durham University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to advance research and impact on the topic of Sustainable and Inclusive Space Innovation for the Cislunar Economy, with a particular emphasis on multisensorial communications and analytical visualization to mitigate emerging space risks. We welcome applications from those with research interests in the field of Space Innovation, Technology Governance, Multisensorial Sciences, and Analytical Visualization to join us. We are particularly eager to hear from applicants with demonstrated experiences in conducting novel qualitative and quantitative research. The successful post-holder will be supervised by Dr Nikita Chiu, Associate Professor in Space Innovation & Technology Governance, and will have the opportunity to be affiliated with research centres based at Durham University. This post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research at the intersection of Space Innovation, Business, and Governance. Key responsibilities Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following · To conduct research on strengthening sustainable and inclusive development of future space activities for the cislunar economy under the supervision of the supervisor, with a focus on integrating multisensorial and accessibility sciences in communicating space risks to a broad audience, including but not limited to policy and industry stakeholders, professionals and individuals with diverse abilities. · To produce high-impact publications and rigorous research outputs on the topics of sustainable and inclusive space innovation under supervision. · To conduct critical analyses based on publicly available information and data on emerging space risks under the supervision of the supervisor. · To prepare and develop policy-relevant visual and multisensorial communications designed to engage a wider audience to appraise and understand emerging space risks, including but not limited to infographics that integrates data visualization, audio, tactile (e.g. through 3D printing), and/or other experimental mechanisms to advance inclusion in communicating space risks. · To assist and provide support to the supervisor in the delivery of high-impact research, impact, and engagement on sustainable and inclusive space innovation. · To engage in wider citizenship to support the department, the space centre, and the University in the development of an inclusive space ecosystem under the direction of the supervisor. · To develop new collaborative projects under the supervision of the supervisor. · To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include but not limited to research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences. · To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the supervisor and offering creative or innovative solutions. · To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration. · To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects. · To engage in continuing professional development, for example by attending relevant training. · To contribute to fostering a collegial, diverse, and professional working environment which is inclusive. This post is fixed term for up to 24 months with an envisioned commencement in April 2026. The funding is available from 1 April 2026 for this fixed period only. The role will be supported by the Strategic Research Fund in association with the Space Research Centre at Durham University. The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
