About the job

Data Engineering Manager – Speciality Insurance

London | Hybrid

Up to £130,000 + Bonus + Excellent Benefits

Arthur is exclusively partnering with a highly respected specialty insurer to appoint a Data Engineering Manager to play a key role in building and evolving its modern data capability.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role, ideal for someone who wants to remain close to engineering and delivery while taking greater ownership of technical strategy, architecture, engineering standards and team leadership.

Rather than a traditional management position removed from the technology, you'll be expected to provide strong technical direction, challenge engineering decisions and ensure the team delivers a scalable, high-quality modern data platform.

You'll help shape the engineering roadmap while remaining close enough to the technology to understand how solutions are being designed, built and deployed.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead the Data Engineering function, providing technical leadership across engineers and delivery partners.
  • Own and evolve the data engineering strategy, technical roadmap and engineering standards.
  • Lead the design, development and ongoing evolution of a modern cloud data platform.
  • Remain close to technical delivery, providing guidance across architecture, engineering patterns, pipelines, data modelling and platform design.
  • Drive engineering best practice across CI/CD, testing, automation, observability, performance and DataOps.
  • Review and challenge technical designs, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable and aligned with the wider architecture.
  • Lead and develop Data Engineers, creating a strong engineering culture and raising technical standards.
  • Work closely with Architecture, Technology, Analytics and business teams to translate requirements into robust data solutions.
  • Support the organisation's longer-term Data & AI strategy, ensuring the engineering platform can enable advanced analytics and AI use cases.
  • Manage strategic technology partners and third-party engineering resources where required.

About You

We're looking for a technically strong Data Engineering leader who has progressed into leadership but has remained close to engineering and delivery.

You'll ideally bring:

  • Strong experience within Data Engineering, with previous hands-on experience designing and building modern data platforms.
  • Experience as a Data Engineering Manager, Lead Data Engineer, Data Engineering Lead or similar technical leadership position.
  • Strong knowledge of modern cloud data architecture and engineering principles.
  • Experience with technologies such as Azure, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, Synapse.
  • Strong understanding of SQL and Python/PySpark based engineering environments.
  • Experience across ETL/ELT, data pipelines, lakehouse architectures, data modelling and orchestration.
  • Good understanding of CI/CD, DevOps/DataOps, automated testing and engineering best practice.
  • Experience leading, mentoring and developing Data Engineers.
  • Ability to balance technical strategy with hands-on delivery leadership.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to communicate technical decisions to both engineering and senior business audiences.

London Market, Specialty Insurance would be advantageous, but strong technical Data Engineering leadership is the priority.

Why Join?

  • Up to £130,000 base salary plus bonus and excellent benefits.
  • Opportunity to take significant ownership of a growing Data Engineering capability.
  • Remain genuinely close to technology, architecture and engineering delivery.
  • Help shape the organisation's future data platform and engineering strategy.
  • Build and develop a high-performing engineering function.
  • Work within a business investing significantly in modern data, cloud and AI capabilities.
