Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

ROLE 1 - CHEMICAL ENGINEERING – MONTROSE

Overview of the Department
As a chemical engineering placement student at Montrose, you could be involved in the support to day-to-day manufacture of APIs, capital projects, sustainability initiatives or cleaning/process improvements.
Manufacturing Science and Technology involves Process Engineering, supporting day-to-day manufacturing operations and capital projects. They are involved in plant troubleshooting, large and small improvements to plant, HAZOPs, and design aspects, as well as chemical engineering challenges: safely handling large quantities of hazardous liquids and powders, heating/cooling, mixing; ensuring product quality. As many of the processes are automated, chemical engineers are heavily involved with the plant control software.
This placement will help you develop your technical, leadership, and communication skills, which are all fundamental to your performance. You will have the opportunity to work alongside, and learn from, other Process Engineers and other teams with vast experience in the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients.

ROLE 2 - CHEMICAL ENGINEERING - WARE

Degree requirements: Chemical Engineering
Overview of the Department
The Chemical Engineering teams at Ware support several initiatives, such as the manufacturing of Oral Solid Dose products for global supply and New Product Introduction. The Manufacturing Science and Technology department then monitor the performance of products and platforms within the Oral Solid Dose, Respiratory and Micronising value streams, overseeing all aspects of product lifecycle management.
You could be placed within either of these departments, supporting the transfer and development of manufacturing process from R&D to GSC, including preparation activities and set-up, troubleshooting/problem solving and process improvements. Additional duties may include introduction and scale up of newly developed R&D assets to ensuring robust and repeatable manufacture of commercialised pharmaceutical products, as well as ensuring that equipment is capable of handling product materials and that such platforms are optimised to allow for efficient performance.

Overview of the Department
Small Molecule Process Science are responsible for developing, improving and industrialising biotechnology processes with focus on profitability and sustainability. We have expertise in molecular and microbiology, fermentation and cell culture, extraction and purification of drug substance, intermediates and enzymes used in synthesis. We are a laboratory-based group with experience in scale-up from discovery/concept to large scale fermentation. We have projects related to small molecule, large molecule and vaccine assets.

Key Placement Learnings

Overview of the Department
Process Engineering and Analytics (PE&A) sits within the Drug Product Design (DPD) department, which is responsible for translating small scale drug product manufacturing processes into commercial scale operations.
As a member of PE&A, the Process Engineer will apply knowledge of unit operations, process engineering and mathematical modelling to support the development, scale-up and manufacture of drug products within the pharmaceutical development lifecycle. They will drive process understanding, capability & improvement projects to support the site strategy, delivering safe, compliant and robust ways of working. Engaging collaboratively with other disciplines, they will strive to ensure optimised and thoroughly understood drug product manufacturing platforms are in place across lab, pilot and commercial scale operations.

Key Placement Learnings

  • To work as part of a multi-disciplinary development team, liaising efficiently with formulators, engineers and scientists, to deliver the work packages required

Process Engineering & Analytics (PE&A) is a multi-disciplinary department which supports the broader business ambitions to accelerate drug development at lower risk and effort by implementing engineering, modelling and automation solutions. Engineers and scientists work on real world problems to implement innovation in all business modalities, such as vaccines, biopharms, small molecules, and across all scales, including labs, pilot and manufacturing.
