JOB DESCRIPTION
The Tamper Operator position at York Rail involves operating tamping machines, specifically the Mark IV, to perform essential maintenance and construction activities related to the installation, repair, and rebuilding of track structures. The operator is responsible for ensuring that all operations are conducted safely and efficiently, adhering to established regulations, policies, and procedures.
This role requires a proactive approach to safety, including performing equipment safety checks and making emergency adjustments as necessary to avoid potential hazards such as utility lines, other equipment, and falling objects. The operator will also study instructions, plans, and diagrams to establish work requirements, ensuring that all tasks are completed according to specifications. In addition to operating the tamping machines, the Tamper Operator will be responsible for inspecting and maintaining trucks and attached apparatuses, including hi-rail gear and tools.
The position requires a minimum of one (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment in a railroad construction environment, along with mechanical troubleshooting skills and knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems. The role includes driving machines onto truck trailers and unloading them, as well as keeping accurate records of material and equipment usage, along with any problems encountered during operations.
The operator must also be able to read and interpret construction specifications and safety documents, ensuring compliance with safety requirements and procedures. The work environment is primarily at construction sites, where the operator will be exposed to various physical demands, including the ability to lift heavy equipment and objects up to 50 pounds, and work in harsh weather conditions. The role requires the use of hands for handling materials and controlling vehicle operations, as well as the ability to sit for extended periods in a closed vehicle.
