Description
Lead the technical direction of a new, high-priority module for LawConnect: using AI to help everyday consumers understand their legal problem, connect with the right lawyer, and stay supported throughout their matter. This is one of the business’s most strategic initiatives, with visibility and backing at the highest level. Report to the Director of Engineering, while working directly with the Founders on one of the company’s top-priority initiatives. Architect, build, and scale a consumer-facing AI experience — from the initial match to ongoing communication and document handling — from 0–1. Own technical decisions across system design, performance, security, and reliability. About using AI across the consumer’s legal journey This initiative helps everyday people get the right legal help, fast — and stay supported all the way through. Most consumers facing a legal problem don’t know what kind of lawyer they need, how to describe their issue, whether their case has merit, or what to expect next. Guiding them to the right outcome requires understanding the consumer’s intent — in their own words — and supporting them well beyond the first connection. LawConnect is the consumer gateway to legal help. This module uses AI across the whole journey: facilitating the initial match between a consumer and the right lawyer, then supporting the ongoing communication between them. It helps assess a case and its merit and guides the consumer on next steps, and it powers document discovery, collection, and management so the right information reaches the right lawyer at the right time. Consumers arrive with very different levels of detail and confidence. Some type a single sentence; others write paragraphs about a stressful, high-stakes situation. The AI must handle that ambiguity gracefully — asking the right questions, capturing the matter accurately, surfacing and organising the relevant documents, and guiding the person to the next step — while always being safe, trustworthy, and clear that it informs rather than provides legal advice. What you’ll do You will own the AI experience that supports the consumer’s journey — from how a person describes their problem, to case assessment, lawyer matching, ongoing communication, and document discovery and management — and the module added to the LawConnect platform to provide this capability. Architect, design, and deliver a consumer-facing AI experience that becomes foundational to how people find legal help through LawConnect. Define strategy, prioritise development, and deliver at pace with the Director of Engineering and the Founders. Own the technical architecture — the end-to-end system, from natural-language intent understanding and case-merit assessment, to lawyer matching, ongoing consumer–lawyer communication, and document discovery, collection, and management. Define the engineering culture — set the standards, practices, and operating rhythms for a team that will grow internationally. To make this happen, you will: Build scalable, secure, and high-performance backend services and polished consumer-facing frontend experiences. Prototype, test, and refine AI-driven features that interpret consumer intent and work reliably with generative AI models. Establish engineering processes, DevOps workflows, observability, and quality standards. Collaborate cross-functionally with other AI teams, product leaders, and senior stakeholders. What you'll bring You’re a curious, self-driven engineer who wants to build meaningful technology. 8+ years of professional experience in full-stack development. Strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, or other modern frameworks. Strong experience in system design, database architecture, and API development. Experience working with generative AI, automation workflows, or agent-based systems is highly desirable. Proven experience building, leading, and scaling high-performing engineering teams — hiring, coaching, and motivating. Excellent communication skills, including working directly with senior leadership. You are the type of person who: Is entrepreneurial and comfortable with ambiguity. Is curious, creative, and analytical. Is driven by solving meaningful problems for real users. Enjoys building products that shape the future of an industry.
