QUALIFICATIONS
Considerable (5+ years) related experience; graduation with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. Minimum 5 years’ experience in computer hardware, serial communication, LANs and modems, wireless communications (cellular and satellite) and ocean instrumentation. Possession of a valid class 5 driver’s license as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador is required. Good written and oral presentation skills and communication skills are required. Previous experience with hardware/firmware/software maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing common problems with marine equipment, oceanographic buoys, sensors, cables and connectors will be considered an asset.
SALARY: $74,530 to $96,791 per annum (Research and Technical Personnel VI, NAPE Local 7405)(Salary scale as of September 1, 2025)

DUTIES
The successful applicant will work as a part of a team of engineers, researchers, and technologists that undertake collaborative research and development and industry outreach projects for a diverse client base that includes fisheries, aquaculture, marine environmental, energy, marine transportation and defence. Duties will include, engineering unique solutions for operations in remote and harsh marine environments; responsibility for maintenance, deployment and operation of oceanographic instrumentation including hardware/firmware/software maintenance; troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing common problems with marine equipment, oceanographic buoys, sensors, cables, connectors, computers, and networks; ensuring that all sensors, instrumentation and equipment are calibrated and maintained to specification and schedule; transporting, cleaning, and storing equipment; reporting and undertaking any needed repairs to equipment; and performing other related duties as required. Depending on the scope and focus of assigned projects, this position will provide services ranging from software and systems design and implementation, data collection and management, as well as testing and deployment of new instruments and equipment.
Ocean vehicles are a key component of the day-to-day operations of the CTec team and a primary applied research focus area. This position will have the opportunity to contribute to a technical team responsible for the maintenance, deployment and operation of a wide range of marine vehicles such as Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs), Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), as well as oceanographic instrumentation. The successful applicant will be expected to work directly with ocean sector clients, researchers, and technology developers. Through project management, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to or lead the development of project concepts, proposal development, budgeting, and reporting. An element of travel both within and outside Newfoundland and Labrador can be expected. There may also be a requirement for short at-sea trips on Marine Institute or client vessels. This position is based at The Launch in Holyrood, NL.
