Overview
Employee will perform a variety of welding and cutting duties in support of Gas Distribution operations, primarily on pipe but not restricted to pipe as some work is performed on flat and irregular shaped metal.
Responsibilities
GENERAL DUTIES The normal duties may include but are not limited to: 1. Employee will be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures, and practices. 2. Employee acting in conjunction with supervision or individually as directed by supervision will assist other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Welder/Fitter Helper or other duties with which the employee is familiar. 3. Employee will, when directed by supervision, report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in the training activities. 4. Employee will carry out assignments in training for and/or performing firefighting and first aid. 5. Employee will exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections of this job classification. Demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by Louisville Gas and Electric to assure correct classification of employees. 6. Employee will, during the normal performance of his duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury. 7. Employee will perform such other duties as directed by the Supervisor that are necessary to Company operation and are within his/her capabilities. 8. Employee will keep all equipment, tools, materials, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition. 9. Employee will report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed. 10. Employee will perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment. 11. Employee will compile information and generate reports, forms and documents as required. 12. Employee will represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance, and attitude. 13. Employee will report, to proper supervision, job progress and all problems, or other factors which affect the job, except recommendations for disciplinary action. SPECIFIC DUTIES Duties which may include, but are not limited to: 1. Employee will learn to and assist in the operation of construction equipment including, but not limited to, forklifts, and hoists. 2. Employee will perform maintenance on tools and keep them in good working order. 3. Employee will assist in making position welds on pipe and fittings of all sizes. 4. Employee will measure and cut piping connections as required. 5. Employee will assist in the installation of weld repair fittings on all size and pressure gas mains, as conditions permit. 6. Employee will assist in the repairs to gas lines by welding various leak repair materials on pipelines where conditions permits. 7. Employee will make cuts into pipelines when directed and safe to do so. 8. Employee will perform cutting and fabricating required for maintenance and construction of gas mains and services. 9. Employee will prepare material for welding or cutting. 10. Employee will assist in the performance of welding and fabricating of other equipment and devices required in operation and maintenance of gas systems, or in other departments, if needed. 11. Employee will cut metal of all thicknesses. 12. Employee will develop and maintain a working knowledge of the current edition of the Gas Department Welding Procedures manual. The workmanship of the employee may be required to comply with the following code: DOT Part 192. 13. Employee to assist in the performance of hydrostatic and pneumatic testing of pipe in a shop environment. 14. Employee will work in construction crew as a crew member when equipment is down, or Welder/Fitter work is unavailable.
Qualifications
EDUCATIONALEXPERIENCE-MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO: GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS 1. Employee must meet all general qualifications of employment. 2. Employee must be able to speak, understand, read, and write English, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 3. Employee must meet all qualifications as required by Federal, State and Municipal regulations as applies to this position. 4. Employee must be able to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work. 5. Employee must be thoroughly familiar with the Company Safety Rules and willingly see that they are adhered to and enforced. 6. Employee must have a valid state driver’s license. Additionally, employee must carry a medical card allowing operation of vehicles with a GCVW of under 26,000 pounds. 7. Employee must be willing to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions. 8. Employee must be willing to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed. 9. Employee must be in good health and be able to perform the physical requirements of the job, which include heavy manual labor. 10. Employee must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports. 11. Employee must have demonstrated ability to carry through work assignments and conduct himself/herself in a manner that encourages cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her. 12. Employee must be rated qualified for entry into this classification under the Louisville Gas and Electric Company’s Employee Performance Review Program and have satisfactorily completed all applicable training and testing programs. 13. Regular attendance is essential for satisfactory performance of this position. 14. Employee must successfully complete such entry level testing programs as are promulgated by Louisville Gas and Electric to measure job responsive aptitude, ability to retain knowledge, and problem-solving skills.;SPECIALQUALIFICATIONS-SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS 1. Employee must learn and gain a proficient knowledge of the current edition of the Company’s welding procedures. 2. Employee must be willing to learn to weld on gas pipelines. To advance beyond the helper position, they must pass the initial qualification test, as required by the LG&E Gas Welding Manual. 3. Employee must have/attain a working knowledge of pipe, fittings and valves related to construction and maintenance of gas system and their proper usage. 4. Employee must learn techniques of steel welding and use of associated equipment. 5. Employee must learn to demonstrate proficiency in the operation and use of cutting torches and related equipment. 6. Employee must have commitment to follow and observe company and department safety practices, policies, and procedures. 7. Employee must have demonstrated the ability to perform simple arithmetic functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). 8. Employee must learn to accurately make sketches and read and understand blueprints and drawings, to make changes and additions to the prints as directed, and to recognize and report possible mistakes on the prints. 9. Employee must learn to use, select, and maintain the tools and equipment normally used in the job. 10. Employee must learn to be proficient in all the duties of welding and cutting as performed in the construction and maintenance of the gas system. 11. Employee must learn to be proficient in the applicable codes, regulations and procedures relating to construction and maintenance of gas facilities and related duties.;WORKCONDITIONS-;PHYSICALEFFORTS-
