Presenting an exciting Band 7, opportunity to become part of our Clinical Theatre Management Team in Gynaecology & Obstetric Theatres.
There are two Gynaecology Theatres, delivering diagnostic and complex Benign Gynaecology Surgery including specialist Endometriosis & Urogynaecology services. The Obstetric Unit consists of three theatres providing Elective Caesarean Sections and twenty-four-hour cover for Emergency Obstetric services. Staff rotate between both Gynaecology & Obstetric specialities. The Scrub team has an establishment of approximately 45 staff including ODPs, Nurses, Surgical First Assistants, and other Support Workers.
You must have experience of working in theatres at a senior level. You must possess proven leadership, and organisational skills and be a highly effective role model within the clinical area. You should have a proven track record of managing change within the clinical setting and be able to influence practice.
You will need to be flexible and adaptable with excellent communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with our current Anaesthetic & Recovery Sister and other colleagues across SuWOn Theatres to support, Safe Staffing, Governance and Health & Safety in the Perioperative Environment.

This post will require some weekend & cross site working to support Senior Theatre Staffing Rota.

  • Lead the Perioperative Team in Churchill/Horton/Women’s Theatres as they work to deliver exemplary clinical practice to all patients within the Theatre environment.
  • Contribute to a climate where staff members appropriately question and challenge practice, and where decision-making can be openly debated, discussed, and escalated when required.
  • Work with the education team to ensure all staff are competent and capable practitioners, improve the quality of the learning environment by providing support, supervision, educational and professional development opportunities for all, within the practice setting.

Clinical Practice
Work clinically alongside staff as a clinical expert to raise, monitor and evaluate standards of clinical practice using evidence-based frameworks.
Demonstrate an advanced level of clinical competence and inform practice development with a sound and current knowledge of professional practice and health care issues, promoting evidence-based practice.
Act as a role model and clinical expert to colleagues by guiding practice, assessing competence, and supporting the implementation of any policies to actively enhance learning in the knowledge and provision of perioperative care.
Establish and develop effective relationships with the multi-disciplinary team to plan and facilitate changes and innovation in practice and support the implementation of change effectively.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team and matron to plan, deliver, maintain, and evaluate an effective specialist, clinical environment through role modelling, leadership, and excellence in practice.
Lead and drive progressive change in clinical practice within the parameters of established national and local priorities, policies, and procedures.
Staff Development
Attend monthly departmental Team Leader meetings, Clinical Governance meetings and Divisional Senior staff meetings.
Establish and maintain regular departmental staff meetings to support the speciality team leaders and matron in all matters relating to practice development and coordinate and facilitate a plan to deliver learning and development at all levels within the perioperative environment.
Establish regular 1-1s and an annual appraisal producing and achieving agreed Personal Development Plans with direct line reports/team leaders.
Support and facilitate Band 6 and 5 practitioners to lead relevant clinical projects to enhance patient care.
Ensure that specialist clinical training and competency assessment for all staff is kept up to date.
Support practitioners in clinical areas and facilitate the implementation of personal development plans, agreed programmes of change and project work within the service, demonstrating a commitment to disseminating information and sharing experiences.
Be responsible for ensuring that learning and development programmes provided, are designed to be consistent with organizational service development and workforce development strategy.
In conjunction with the education team, identify priorities and educational needs, leading the development of an effective and efficient local study leave policy such that staff can attend mandatory training, relevant study days/conferences and advanced study programmes as identified in their personal development plans.
In collaboration with senior clinical staff, develop and maintain an effective and creative learning environment for all individuals seeking knowledge and experience in perioperative practice and support the education team, speciality team leaders and matron in all matters relating to staff development.
Working with the education team, facilitate a plan to deliver learning and development within the service to meet individual, team, service, and directorate needs and in partnership with the education team pre-empt and identify constraints to the learning process and formulate a realistic approach to overcome obstacles.
Support the education team to ensure a robust mentorship system is in place to provide a continuous means of clinical support and supervision.
In conjunction with the education team evaluate the efficacy of individual’s clinical skills and assist individuals in the development of their individual professional portfolios.
In conjunction with the education team be responsible for ensuring that learning and development programs provided are designed to be consistent with organizational service development and workforce development strategy.
Contribute to the development of a new modern career framework for the non-medical workforce
Participate in and contribute to the divisional and trust professional education agenda, ensuring education is delivered in line with the key priorities and objectives of trust strategy and meets Care Quality Commission requirements.
Personal Development
Maintain own professional development by participation in regular 1-1s with Deputy Matron and an annual appraisal producing and achieving agreed Personal Development Plans.
Act as a role model in the knowledge and provision of perioperative care and demonstrate the ability to concentrate, prioritise and multitask for prolonged periods of time whilst applying attention to detail and consistency of approach even in adverse conditions.

Promote effective change management in line with Health & Safety & Clinical Governance within the Perioperative environment.
Implement and evaluate National Theatre Standards within the perioperative environment in line with the CQC Domains.
Contribute to the development of clinical practice within the OUH when specialist knowledge is required.
Develop links with Clinical Governance team; local University providers, other academic institutions, and professional and organisational bodies to ensure a comprehensive approach to training and development.
Ensure that the overall learning and development plan demonstrates a clear audit trail.
Reflect an in-depth knowledge of current clinical research and changes in clinical practice.
Identify research opportunities within the clinical areas and provide direction and support to staff in undertaking these opportunities.
