Position: Take a Hike - Learning Specialist Alternate Teacher (LSAT)
FTE: .20FTE Thursday

Start Date: September 2, 2025 to June 30, 2026

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education and/or PDP
  • Bachelor’s degree - Outdoor Environmental Education
  • Specific coursework in Curriculum and Instruction or Inclusive Education, or Counselling Psychology is desirable
  • Wilderness first aid (min. 40 hours) or currently enrolled in the course
  • Certification and/or training, as well as teaching experience, in hiking, backpacking, ocean kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, cycle touring, and essential outdoor skills (minimum impact camping, outdoor cooking, first aid, map and compass skills, weather interpretation, snow shelter construction, equipment preparation, clothing selections, trip planning, etc.)
  • Successful teaching experience with youth facing barriers, preferably in an alternate educational setting
  • Knowledge and experience in winter backcountry wilderness travel
  • Knowledge and experience on what to do during an unexpected wilderness emergency
  • Demonstrated experience of multi-day expeditions of different types in remote terrain (at least 40 days recommended) is desirable
  • Avalanche Skills and Safety Training (AST 1) an asset
  • Knowledge of and practice in risk management for land-based learning opportunities
  • Successful experience and qualifications with counselling psychology would be an asset
  • Ability to implement a trauma-informed approach to classroom management
  • Generalist approach teaching English/Social Studies/Science/Math (ability with Sr. Math essential) and other ministry or locally developed courses, including Social Emotional Learning curriculum
  • Successful experience with students with a variety of learning/behaviour issues (category Q, R and H) and other Special Education designations
  • Ability to case manage (specifically IEPs/IBPs, designations, and calling and chairing of the of the ICM process) students facing barriers, with complex social, emotional, behavioural and academic needs
  • Successful experience adapting or modifying curriculum based on individual student needs as outlined in the IEP
  • Ability to relate and connect with youth facing barriers in a non-judgmental, patient and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability and/or desire to create a flexible program for students with diverse social/emotional/academic needs
  • Strong relationship and collaboration skills (school-based staff, district staff, parents, students, community partners). Liaise with cross-enrolled school
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability in using computers and a variety of technology tools for learning including but not limited to search techniques, software knowledge, Distributed Learning and online curriculum options
  • Ability to teach and integrate art into their instructional practices
  • Competency in a variety of curriculum delivery techniques (self-paced, cooperative, project-based, integrated, instructional institute etc.)
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of support agencies for youth in the Mission community, including but not limited to MCFD (SW and CYMH), Fraser Health, Mission Community Services, Fraser House, Child and Youth Crisis Program, Xyolhemeylh, and Lifetime Learning Centre Society
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and demonstrated teaching ability
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to the needs and demands of the profession
  • Ability to organize for instruction to maximize student potential
  • Training and/or certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Food Safe is desired
  • Willingness to practice and promote cultural sensitivity and awareness
  • Have a passion and commitment to Indigenous Education, truth and reconciliation
