JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the VP of Finance, the Senior Accountant II will focus on managing the chart of accounts, overseeing account reconciliations, and taking ownership of more complex accounting projects. The Senior Accountant II will play a vital role in maintaining financial integrity, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing strategic support to leadership in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Fund EZ, Sage Intacct, or similar).
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modeling).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and provide strategic financial insights.
  • H.A.S. requires all staff to work on site.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required); CPA or equivalent professional designation preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a nonprofit setting.
  • Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles (GAAP), financial reporting standards, and grant compliance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP).
  • General Ledger Maintenance: Lead and oversee the management of the general ledger, ensuring accuracy in journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close procedures.
  • Chart of Accounts Management: Maintain and manage the chart of accounts, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all financial reporting and transactions.
  • Grant & Fund Management: Manage accounting for restricted funds, grants, and donations, ensuring compliance with donor and grantor requirements. Prepare financial reports for grants and assist with related audits.
  • Audit & Compliance: Lead preparation for the annual audit, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting regulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of financial regulations affecting nonprofits.
  • Internal Controls: Continuously evaluate and improve internal controls and procedures to mitigate financial risks and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Financial Analysis: Generate financial reports and provide analysis to support decision-making at the senior management level.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist in the preparation of the annual budget, monitoring actual expenses and revenue against budgeted amounts, and providing variance analysis to management.
  • Tax Filings & Compliance: Collaborate with external accountants to ensure accurate and timely filing of nonprofit tax returns, including Form 990 and state filings.
  • Organizational Responsibilities: Attends and participates in agency meetings and fund-raising efforts. Cross trains (both receives and provides) team members for primary and secondary responsibilities to provide back-up during absences.
