Description Zingerman’s Candy Store is a part of Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory, maker of hand-made, small batch confections. Serving our retail customers from our location inside Zingerman’s Coffee Co.’s busy cafe on Zingerman’s Southside in Ann Arbor, we sell confections that we make ourselves as well as those we carefully curate from other national and international producers. We provide extensive and ongoing education opportunities for staff within the business and industry. Come help us build Zingerman’s Candy Manufactory retail store as a part of a dynamic team that values your contributions! Compensation: $14.50-$15.00/hr plus tips, depending upon relevant knowledge and experience, $0.50 raise with completion of orientation passport and $0.50/hr raise after 1 year. Tips generally add approximately $2-$4+ per hour, depending upon guest volume. This is a Part Time Year Round position Approximately 20-25 hours, 3-4 days a week, plus physical inventory one Sunday a month after close 26-40 hrs/week are required for some weeks starting in November through the end of December, especially Fri, Sat, Sun Potential for additional hours in other departments around Candy as available Holiday and weekend availability is required Shifts are typically 9:00-4:15, with some shifts as early as 8:00am and as late as 5:00pm Some tasks, events, and holiday extended hours require staff on site as early as 7:00am and as late as 8:00pm. Food discounts throughout all ZCoB businesses upon completion of orientation Performance Expectations - Essential Functions: Greets and assists all guests in the store or on the phone, giving great service and going the extra mile every time Shares the Zingerman’s experience with our guests by regularly making guests feel like they were the best part of their day Actively sells products using Zingerman’s sales methods including active engagement with and sampling to guests Proactively adds to their knowledge of our products and shares that knowledge with guests Tastes chocolate and confections every shift using specific techniques in order to better describe, sell, and assess quality Completes Training Passports within stated time frames and takes responsibility for their own learning Maintains displays of products using the Zingerman's and Candy Manufactory merchandising guidelines Uses cash register to accurately complete guest purchases according to SOP Reads and responds to email regularly Follows and completes all daily, weekly, etc. tasks on checklists Writes and reads brief daily shift notes Keeps workspaces tidy and clean - including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, wiping surfaces, cleaning glass, etc. Keeps supplies, materials, and tools organized and stocked Completes side work as needed and directed Follows all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines when using equipment and handling products Positively responds to requests for assistance from co-workers, supervisors, managers and guests Takes initiative to help any area of the Candy Manufactory if possible Actively finds work to do during any slow times Participates in weekly meetings to stay up to date with the on-goings of the business Follows all Zingerman's and Candy Manufactory SOP’s (ex. service, customer complaints, receiving orders, cash handling, etc.) Participates in writing SOPs as needed Upholds all Zingerman's Guiding Principles and the Mission Statement Other Functions: Conducts inventory as assigned Cross-training opportunities in other areas of the Candy Manufactory Encouraged to attend and participate in Zingerman's events, classes, and learnings Physical Demands Must be able to remain upright for up to a 6-8 hour shift Must be able to relocate up to 30 pounds on occasion Must be able to reach, bend, grasp, kneel, use a step ladder The Success Patterns for this position are: Has at least 1 year of experience working in retail sales or customer service Experience working with specialty foods; chocolate and confections knowledge are a plus Excellent communication skills in person & over the phone Has basic arithmetic and cash handling skills Good computer literacy, with experience with Toast point of sale and Google Drive suite preferred Consistent availability preferred, additional availability October through December strongly preferred Once trained, comfortable being the sole person working in the store Punctual and self-motivated Successful Candidates will have the following Personal Characteristics: Self-directed - good at setting priorities, enjoys keeping busy Enjoys engaging with people and has strong interpersonal skills Enthusiastic, outgoing, and positive High integrity and trustworthiness Excited about chocolate, candy Enjoys selling and merchandising Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented Asks for help when needed Comfortable with task switching and working from task lists and SOP’s Able to effectively manage their emotions in the workplace, especially under pressure Problem-solver Passionate about great food, great finance and great service Can handle complexity and paradox Being able to work effectively as part of a team
