The Streetscene Service, within the Climate, Homes and Economy Directorate, is dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe and accessible environment for the residents, businesses and visitors of Hackney. By contributing to the well-being of our community and fostering a sustainable public realm, we aim to create a thriving and inclusive urban landscape.
The Highways Team, a part of the Street Scene Service, is responsible for the design and maintenance of the entire highway network, including footways, carriageways, structures and bridges, drainage systems (including sustainable urban drainage systems – SuDS), street lighting and arboriculture.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Highways Engineer, specialising in Major Projects, to join our Highways team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in the development and management of major capital investment programmes within a complex urban environment. Your primary role will be to assist in overseeing and delivering both major and minor highway maintenance projects across the borough, spanning from Shoreditch to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and surrounding neighbourhoods. It will be essential to ensure that all projects are executed to a high standard and aligned with our vision for the area.
To succeed in this position, you will need to demonstrate an understanding of highway construction, project management and general highway maintenance. Your experience should extend to working with external contractors and within a local authority context.
Candidates for this role should exhibit development management skills, be familiar with planning policies and processes, and possess excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English. The ability to work independently, manage time effectively and provide oversight to a team is crucial. While not mandatory, possession of a relevant professional qualification and membership (or eligibility for membership) of a relevant professional body is desirable.
As a Council, our most outstanding asset is our staff, who are highly dedicated to serving our residents and committed to our goals as an organisation.
