Stipendiary Lectureship in Engineering Science (4 Hours) Application Deadline: 15 May 2026 Department: Academic Office Employment Type: Fixed Term Contract Location: Oxford Compensation: £11,270 - £12,446 / year Description General The appointment will be for the Academic Year 2026-2027 commencing 1 September 2026. This post will provide a promising academic with the opportunity to develop skills in teaching, pastoral care and academic administration in a supportive environment. Nature of the Appointment This post is a fixed-term College appointment for one year to cover a specific need during the time that our Tutorial Fellow in Engineering, Professor Xiaowen Dong, is on sabbatical. The post is considered to be a career development opportunity and whilst a renewal of the appointment might be available, it is College policy that stipendiary lectureships will not be renewed for a period of longer than 3 years. Duties The person appointed will be expected to teach undergraduates studying for the Engineering Science degree at Oxford for an average of at least four contact hours per week during Full Term. The lecturer should be able to offer high quality tutorials in Paper P1: Engineering Mathematics to first year students, and Paper A1: Engineering Mathematics to second year students. All payment for any external tuition shall be remitted to Lady Margaret Hall. In addition to teaching, the lecturer will be expected to participate in related administrative duties and pastoral duties. If appropriate, you will be asked to act as Personal Tutor for up to 12 undergraduates reading Engineering Science, monitoring progress and providing pastoral support; you would be expected to take a pastoral interest in all of the students you teach and to raise any academic and wellbeing issues with the Senior Tutor. The role will involve writing termly reports on the Teaching Management System (TMS) for each series of tutorials for each student taught. The appointee will be required to set and mark collections (college examinations) at the beginning of each term. The person appointed will be involved in the Admissions process, which will include selecting and interviewing candidates for Engineering Science in December (training is required and will be provided, if this has not already been completed). The person appointed will be expected to act as College Advisor to Lady Margaret Hall graduate students in Engineering Science and cognate areas. The lecturer will work under the direction of Professor Nick Hankins (Tutorial Fellow in Engineering) and the Senior Tutor. The appointment carries with it membership of the College’s Education Committee. The lecturer is expected to be involved in social events with undergraduates (e.g. the Freshers’ Dinner, the Engineering Society dinner and the Schools’ dinner) which are funded by the college. It is hoped that the lecturer will become an active member of the college community and participate fully in the life of the College. A commitment to the intellectual life of the College, beyond tutorial teaching and beyond the prescribed contractual duties, would be an advantage. Salary, Benefits and How to Apply The salary will be on the Senior Tutors’ scale for stipendiary lecturers which is £11,270 to £12,446 per annum (current rates for four hours teaching per week). The post is superannuated within the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). A research allowance of £252 per annum will be paid on presentation of receipts to the Senior Tutor (via the Academic Registrar). The lecturer will be entitled to weekday lunches in Hall without charge during full term and the vacation, and one free dinner per week during term (this includes Week 0 and Week 9). Other meals may be taken if paid for; all drinks and formal desserts are charged. The lecturer may have some access to a shared College room for the purpose of teaching but bookable teaching rooms are available. The lecturer will be eligible for membership of the Senior Common Room at Lady Margaret Hall. There is no entitlement to sabbatical leave.
