Duties and Responsibilities
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It is composed of 15 judges, elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council. The Court has a twofold role: first, to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States; and, second, to give advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies. The Court is the only principal organ of the United Nations not serviced by the Secretariat. The Court has its own administration, the Registry, which provides judicial support to the Court and acts as a permanent administrative organ. The Registry is headed by a Registrar, elected by the Court. The internship is located in the Office of the Deputy-Registrar. Under the supervision of the Deputy-Registrar, and/or the Associate Legal Officer in the Office of the Deputy-Registrar, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: - Assist the Deputy-Registrar by conducting research and analysis, preparing documentation and correspondence pertaining to legal and policy aspects of the administrative duties of the Registry; - Assist the Deputy-Registrar in the management of the Court’s Judicial Fellowship Programme (JFP), including preparation, administration and evaluation of the Programme. In this regard, provide support for the implementation of the UNGA resolution 75/129 concerning the Trust Fund for the JFP aimed at improving participation in the Programme for young lawyers from developing countries in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal 16, promoting peace, justice and strong institutions; - Assist the Deputy-Registrar in the performance of his responsibilities related to the coordination of the work of the Registry, including the chairmanship of various committees, working groups and task forces. This assignment may entail preparing background materials, summaries of issues, specific analysis, agendas, drafting of minutes of meetings and reports, etc.
Qualifications/special skills
A Master’s degree in international law (LLM, M2 in IL), international affairs, Masters of Business Administration or equivalent is required. Prior experience in an international judicial set-up may be an asset. Excellent drafting and communication skills in English. Ability to work collaboratively within a team is required.
Languages
English and French are the official and working languages of the International Court of Justice. Excellent drafting and communication skills in English are required. A working knowledge of French would be an asset.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
