The DIU ensures that research is conducted to the highest standards of ethics, scientific integrity, and regulatory compliance, enabling innovation that benefits patients and the broader community.   The Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) plays a central role in safeguarding the welfare, rights, and dignity of participants involved in research. Operating in line with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, the HREC reviews and monitors research to ensure ethical acceptability and compliance with relevant law and policy.   About the role  As the HREC – Law member, you will contribute legal expertise to ensure that research proposals reviewed by the committee are ethically and legally compliant. You will provide independent advice on matters such as consent, privacy, guardianship, and regulatory frameworks, supporting Austin Health’s commitment to safe, ethical, and impactful research.   A regular day will see you:    Attend scheduled HREC meetings and contribute actively to deliberations. Review research applications and assess their legal and ethical acceptability. Provide advice on legislation relevant to research, including privacy, guardianship, and health records law. Contribute to discussions regarding consent processes, confidentiality, contracts, and intellectual property. Maintain confidentiality and manage conflicts of interest appropriately.   About you  You will be a qualified lawyer who brings expertise, independence, and sound judgment to the committee.   To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you: Current engagement in legal practice with a current practising certificate in Australia. Demonstrated knowledge of health, privacy, contract, or administrative law (or related areas). Ability to critically appraise complex documents and identify legal and ethical issues. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Commitment to attending meetings regularly and contributing constructively to deliberations.
