Description
Description Since 1984, Asheville Humane Society has dedicated itself to ensuring every animal has the quality of life they deserve—a life worth living. Now, we go beyond our walls to help create a more humane community for pets and the people who love them. As the only open-intake animal shelter in Buncombe County, we're always here for the animals in our community. Position Summary: As a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) on the Surgical Team, the individual in this role plays a critical part in delivering high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter services to both shelter animals and community pets. This position is responsible for ensuring safe anesthesia, maintaining smooth surgical flow, and providing compassionate patient care from induction through recovery. Much of the work takes place aboard the organization’s Mobile Medical Unit (MMU), where teamwork, adaptability, and a sense of humor are essential in close quarters. The RVT helps expand access to veterinary care for families and pets who need it most while working alongside skilled and supportive professionals who share a strong commitment to animal welfare. Schedule: The Surgical RVT is a full-time position that will work Monday – Thursday, 10-hour shifts, from 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. Compensation & Benefits: The compensation range for the Surgical RVT is $23.70-$28.00/hour. AHS is pleased to offer a competitive and comprehensive benefits package to full-time employees that includes: medical, dental, and vision insurance, a Simple IRA plan with up to 3% company match, 18 days of PTO in the first year, paid holidays, pet prescription discounts, and more! Benefits are available after 60 days of employment. Key Responsibilities Perform surgical prep, induction, intubation, monitoring, and recovery for up to 20 animals per day. Administer and document medications, vaccines, microchips, and fluids. Manage anesthetic complications and follow RECOVER CPR protocols when needed. Maintain surgical and anesthesia equipment, ensuring aseptic technique and safety. Conduct pre- and post-op patient assessments and prepare take-home instructions. Assist veterinarians during procedures and community outreach events such as pop-up wellness or vaccine clinics. Mentor veterinary assistants and volunteers in anesthesia and surgical care. Maintain accurate digital medical records and foster clear communication across the team. Perform other duties as assigned. Requirements Licensed Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in North Carolina (required). Experience in veterinary or high-volume spay/neuter settings (preferred). Proficiency in anesthesia, venipuncture, and surgical assistance. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Compassionate and nonjudgmental approach to client and community interactions. Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license. This position requires the ability to lift up to 60 pounds and perform physical activities such as standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and repetitive motions for extended periods. Must have the ability to maintain focus and composure in a high-volume, high-stress environment. Must also possess good hearing, vision, manual dexterity, and agility to work safely around animals and equipment. The surgical unit operates in a fast-paced, high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter environment that can be emotionally and physically demanding. The RVT must demonstrate resilience, professionalism, and a commitment to maintaining a compassionate and efficient workplace.
