Description

Stigma and discrimination can seriously impact wellbeing and personal recovery for people who experience psychosis. Peer-delivered interventions for people with psychosis who have been impacted by stigma show promise, but most trials have been small and have focussed on feasibility. Let’s Talk 2 is a 32-month NIHR-funded randomised controlled trial, led by Prof Tony Morrison and Dr Melissa Pyle (the Psychosis Research Unit), following the success of our NIHR-funded feasibility trial, Let’s Talk 1. Let’s Talk 2 will evaluate the possible benefits of Let’s Talk, a peer-delivered intervention which aims to aid mental health disclosure decision-making, versus standard care from EIP Services and CMHTs. Let’s Talk is adapted from the Honest, Open Proud Programme, developed in the USA by Prof Patrick Corrigan and Associate Prof Jon E Larson. The trial will run in Avon and Wiltshire, Greater Manchester, North East London, and South London . We have a strong PPI team and experts in Psychosis, Peer Support, and Stigma and Discrimination leading the trial.
The successful applicants will gain high-quality training within psychosis and stigma research, and delivery of semi-structured psychosocial assessments; receive weekly individual supervision; and work on a clinical trial that will advance the field of stigma research. The posts would suit people interested in pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology or clinical research. Applicants must be available to start work on 1st October, 2025.
To liaise regularly with clinical and voluntary services across GMMH to promote the study, including delivering presentations to teams, and aid recruitment of participants according to monthly recruitment targets;
To meet with participants who experience psychosis and internalised stigma to complete baseline and follow-up clinical research assessments (semi-structured interview assessments and other questionnaires);
To enter data and manage databases;
To support and enhance the clinical research activities of the Let’s Talk 2 trial and PRU;
To undertake training, team meetings, and regular supervision with a Clinical Psychologist.
The successful applicants will have a good first degree in Psychology (at least a 2:1) and experience working as an assistant psychologist or research assistant. An interest in psychosis and knowledge of audit, research design and data analysis is also essential. Experience using a structured psychological or psychiatric interview would be advantageous.
Supervision is provided for all duties from Dr Melissa Pyle (Chief Investigator) and/or Dr Emmeline Joyce (Clinical Psychologist/Trial Manager)

The post is based at Central Park (M40), but will involve extensive travel within Greater Manchester to visit participants and clinical services. This would be facilitated by having a valid driving license, and/or access to own or other independent means of transport.
