Job description
Salary: From September 2025 - £7.55 per hour - £279.35 per week - National Apprenticeship Wage - during first 12 months. (If 19 years old or over, after 12 months your salary will increase to minimum wage for your age)
Hours: 37 hours per week
Location: Carlisle with some limited home working
Contract: Apprenticeship
Start Date: From September 2025 onwards

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

To provide advice and support in the development of transport infrastructure and regeneration schemes; developing your technical expertise and confidence over time, contributing to the development of infrastructure plans and strategies and enabling delivery of transport infrastructure to support economic growth within the County.

The apprenticeship post will be focussed on transportation projects within the Infrastructure Planning and Transport team at Cumberland Council and will work on projects which identify and appraise transport schemes guided by best-practice guidelines.

  • Assist in the appraisal of transport schemes, including the identification of existing problems and issues and options for improvement, the appraisal of the positive and negative impacts of options and the prioritisation of options.
  • Assist in the production and maintenance of the council’s transport models, the operation of these models to assess scheme impacts or provide supporting evidence for scheme development, and associated documentation.
  • Use and assist in the maintenance of the Council’s Geographical Information System (GIS) database system.
  • Undertake analysis of transport-related data such as traffic flows, accident statistics, journey time data and economic data such as scheme costs and monetised benefits.
  • Assist in the assessment of transport-related impacts of planning applications through the review of the relevant planning documentation.
  • Support with report writing and Business Case development.
  • Support with project management responsibilities such as organising meetings, sending out communications to project members, creating and updating risk logs, project update reports (BRAGs), stakeholder engagement exercises and public consultation exercises.
  • Support Programme Leads and Lead Officers in the management of transportation projects and the review of technical documentation and outputs from those projects.
