Description POSITION TITLE: Medical/Telemedicine Assistant I (MTAI) CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Tribal Health SUPERVISOR: RN-II GRADE: NE9 $17.84 ($37,107.20) - $26.76 ($56,660.80) Position Summary: Medical/Telemedicine Assistant I (MTAI) are early to mid-career Medical Assistants who are seeking a pathway to formal Medical Assistant status while showing a commitment to serving Washoe Tribal Health Center’s (WTHC) patient population. Under continuous direct supervision, the MTAI provides care as directed to all patients in accordance with the accepted standards of medical care. MTAI’s continuously consult with Registered Nurses and/or Medical Clinicians on patient problems. Report to supervisors all incidents that might affect patients, personnel, or visitors adversely. MTAI’s are enthusiastic adult learners who accept direction readily, show progressive improvement in a structured career path as set forth at the beginning of employment, and maintain a consistent commitment to a career in healthcare service to the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. Maintains the confidentiality of all privileged information. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: · The MTAI is responsible for assisting the medical staff who provide in-person/telemedicine services in addition to serving as a backup for all other support staff functions. · Participates in telemedicine conference calls and assists the medical staff with physician orders, lab orders, and the processing of any forms/documents as required. · Performs patient screening as directed. · Actively obtains patients’ medical/surgical/social history while updating health records accurately, concisely, and thoroughly as directed. · Accurately monitors and records patients’ height, weight, and vital signs. · Accurately documents all components of a medical visit intake: reconciles medications including strength and dosing schedule as directed, history of present illness, etc. · Consistently maintains order and cleanliness of the facility, i.e. in laboratory, exam rooms, central supply, nurse’s station, and any other area as directed. · Administers medications orally and by injection including routine vaccinations once competency is documented, under clinician’s written order and verified per protocol. · Enters Immunizations into the Web-Based Immunization Information System (WEBIZ) Registry and assists in the recall system. · Calls patients with normal lab/test results or abnormal results per written instruction. · Calls or faxes prescription refills as directed by the ordering clinician. · Assists in ordering, receiving, and stocking of medications, samples, and supplies. · Autoclaving and maintenance of sterile surgical instruments and supplies as directed. · Schedules patients for transportation per protocol. · Re-schedules and notifies clients when a Clinic is cancelled or re-scheduled. · Gives follow-up phone calls for no-call or no-show patients. · Assists providers with paperwork outside of the clinic as well as paperwork related to referrals (i.e. Specialty Consultations, home health, physical therapy, etc.). · Guides and instructs patients in self-care activities, i.e. personal hygiene, nutrition, family planning, and grooming needs as directed. · Prepares, maintains, and operates under supervision specialized equipment for the care of patients (i.e., EKG, suction, inhalation therapy, spirometry, etc.). · Assists physician/clinical nurse in the application of life saving techniques in emergencies. · Applies dressings/bandages, removes sutures, irrigates tissues, and applies topical medications once competency is established; documents these activities to standard. · Collects, prepares, and documents lab specimens i.e. blood, urine, stool, sputum, etc. · Actively trains towards competency in phlebotomy. · Performs laboratory functions as assigned and serves as a back-up in the lab as-needed. · Provides health screening and health education for groups and individuals as directed and assists with implementation of immunization program. · Maintains inventory in laboratory, supply room, and patient exam rooms. · Steadily acquires and maintains professional knowledge and proficiency. · Performs other duties as required. Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications: · Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe. · Maintains confidentiality when interacting with patients, families, personnel, and the public. · Ability to lift, stand, and assist patients when transporting, or assist patients in wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids. · Ability to maintain accurate patient records. · Ability to understand and follow technical written and oral instructions. · Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. · Ability to learn to effectively operate specialized medical equipment. · Ability to work effectively with physicians, registered nurses, and other health professionals. · Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing. · Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels. · Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence. · Answer incoming, outgoing calls in a professional manner. · Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. · Skill in operating business computers and office machines in a Windows environment, specifically Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, Access, etc. · Skill entering data into electronic health record (EHR) systems · Knowledge of HIPAA and how it pertains to the medical record. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to operate a motor vehicle; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work Environment: Work is generally performed in a clinical setting with a moderate noise level.
