Description Under the direction of the Director of Family, Marriage, & Youth Ministry and in accordance with established policies and procedures, professional staff member who is responsible for: a) Initial evaluation of each parish youth ministry needs and any existing youth ministry efforts; b) Designing, in consultation with the diocesan director, a model for youth ministry appropriate to the needs of each parish (including outreach and attention to the needs of multi-cultural youth where present); c) Recruitment, training, supervision of a team of adult youth ministry volunteers in each parish; d) Incorporating all components of comprehensive youth ministry into the program; and e) Assisting parish teams in coordinating activities of high school and junior high youth groups. An employment position in ministry carries with it the essential responsibilities of one or more of the following which is not intended to be an all-inclusive list: teaching, evangelizing, liturgical worship and church governance. Positions included within this category include but are not limited to Clergy (Priest or Deacon), Religious (Nun or Brother), Deacon, Seminarian, Director of Religious Education, OCIA Director, Director of Adult Religious Formation, Liturgical Minister, Youth Minister, Director of Music, and Choir Director. Requirements • For parishes with new or not-yet-established youth ministries: conducts initial evaluation of youth ministry needs and provide guidance regarding the components of comprehensive youth ministry. • Provides ongoing support and assessment of effectiveness of youth ministry programs in each parish, documenting areas of progress and targets for further development • Train and support a core ministry team of adult volunteers to assist in planning and facilitating parish youth ministry programs, retreats, events and activities • Works with the Parish Catechetical Leader to ensure incorporation of appropriate religious education opportunities through youth group activities • Provides for a relational ministry that is welcoming, encouraging and supportive to young people and adult leaders • Follows diocesan and parish requirements for adults working with youth, including but not limited to: recruitment, background checks, training, and participation in Safe Environment workshops • Adheres to diocesan and parish requirements regarding safety and liability issues, permission forms and group transportation • Fosters group participation in diocesan youth ministry programs and events • Develops an outreach plan for each parish to target inactive parish youth • Support parishes in recognizing and respecting cultural diversity, adapting ministry approaches to meet the needs of various cultural groups, and actively promoting cross-cultural understanding and appreciation within the Church. • Works with parish to develop a budget for Youth Ministry programs and strives to adhere to budget throughout the year as needed. • Participates in ongoing personal development through diocesan and other training and formation programs and workshops • Other related responsibilities as directed by the supervisor after consultations with the pastors • Support of all current diocesan youth ministry events as needed SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position supervises volunteer adult youth ministry teams in each parish. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A.) from a four-year college or university preferred. Minimum of two years volunteer or employment experience working with adolescents; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Understanding of the Catholic approach to comprehensive youth ministry. Understanding of the developmental needs of both younger and older adolescents. Must remain current on pastoral, spiritual, psychological, ecclesiastical and management techniques through reading, attending workshops, etc., in order to provide appropriate direction to the pastoral groups. Must have a working knowledge of budgets and preparation of for projects as well as for the office. LANGUAGE SKILLS Bilingual, Spanish – English, oral and written skills with the ability to translate; ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and small to mid-sized groups of those being served, volunteers and employees. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must have a current valid Texas Driver’s License and must attend the Safe Environment Training and earn a certificate.
