I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK

Equipment: Ability to operate light and heavy vehicles and equipment, rollers, high pressure water trucks, sweeper and vac trucks, paint striper, guardrail pounder, Dura patcher, compactors, chain saws, power tools and various power saws, water pumps, generators, and grade control devices. Ability to use rope, slings, chains, shovels, hand tools, saws, grass seeder, sprayers, and pinch bars. Ability to operate a chipper and a loader. Ability to operate levels, and laser equipment used in performance of the job. Ability to use new equipment that may be introduced into the work setting and relevant to the job.

CRITICAL SKILLS AND EXPERTISE:

• Working knowledge of operation of grading equipment;
• Working knowledge of truck and other motorized equipment operations;
• Working knowledge of operation of chain saws and chippers and other equipment with potential for physical harm;
• Working knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation of complex automotive equipment in traffic and in and around work crew areas;
• Working knowledge of the component parts of vehicles and equipment, the performance limits, and the preventative maintenance necessary to keep equipment in satisfactory operation;
• Working knowledge of pavement marking application, sign installation and guardrail installation or any equivalent combination of training and experience;
• Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of non-electric traffic control devices and guardrail;
• Working knowledge of various measuring devices used to locate and lay out signs, pavement markings and guardrail;
• Working knowledge of the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Ohio Department of Transportation Standard Construction Drawings;
• Ability to read and comprehend written plans, diagrams, and written instructions/directives;
• Ability to understand oral communications;
• Working knowledge of ditch maintenance and construction techniques and the ability to apply the same to work assignments;
• Working knowledge of and the ability to implement safety practices and procedures as they apply to work assignments;
• Working knowledge of lay-out practices, procedures, and techniques as relates to ditch maintenance and drainage pipe work;
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations necessary to the maintenance, installation, and grading activities;
• Working knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and work directives and their applicability to the assigned duties; and,
• Ability to work well with others and to extend courtesy to the public.
  Incumbent performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks and is required to utilize a variety of technical information and knowledge in completing the work assignments. Work is exacting, strenuous, and requires extreme caution and strict adherence to applicable safety measures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Full manual dexterity is required to use tools, instruments, and equipment where prehension and power grasping is required. Incumbent frequently lifts up to twenty-five (25) pounds and occasionally lifts up to eighty (80) pounds. Incumbent must be able to speak and understand the English language.

Incumbent works under general supervision following established procedures and policies, methods and equipment to be used and direction in clearing brush and undergrowth. Incumbent does not supervise or direct jobs of others but does guide and direct heavy equipment operators in the performance of their duties where vision, such as depth perception, may be affected or in close quarters. Work may be reviewed while in process or upon completion, and errors are readily detected in the normal course of work through standard checks. Errors ma result in property damage, physical harm, and litigation. Supervision sets guidelines and manages job progression and changes.
