POSITION SUMMARY
The Laboratory Specimen Collector, Processor &/or Lab Assistant is responsible for the daily collection of patient samples according to established policies and procedures. Understands laboratory sample collections, processing and storage requirements for in-house testing and referral lab testing. Possesses the ability to organize workload for maximum efficiency, accuracy and to help maintain the quality of patient testing. Assist testing personnel with laboratory testing. Ability to maintain good patient relations and handle difficult situations in a lab collection center.
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Safety, OSHA and Biomedical precautions
· Disposes biomedical waste according to OSHA standards.
· Utilizes Personal protective equipment as needed.
· Works within safety policies and procedures defined by lab protocol 4. Maintains the lab in a safe and clean manner.
B. Patient and Client Relations
· Professional and courteous to patients and clients always
· Provides patient with preparation and collection instructions for lab testing
· Helpful to patients and clients in answering questions and follow-ups up as necessary.
· Always maintains patient confidentiality
C. Specimen Processing, Test Ordering, and daily tasks
· Follows the physician order when ordering tests.
· Verifies Insurance and correctly enters it in the system.
· Ensures that the specimen meets sample requirements for in-house testing as well as testing sent to reference labs.
· Ensures that lab test requisitions are accurately completed and follows-up for additional information if needed.
· Orders tests into the LIS accurately and in a timely manner
· Checks sample label before placing bar code label on the sample, ensuring positive identification
· Properly processes the samples and always maintains specimen integrity.
· Calls the Physician or ordering facility with any questions regarding the lab test orders.
D Inventory Control and daily monitors
· Maintains proper rotation of supplies, dates, and initials upon receipt.
· Orders supplies as needed, notifies supervisor of any inventory issues.
· Assists supervisor in inventory management and helps unpack supplies
· Documents temperatures and maintenance daily when patient testing is performed.
· Takes corrective actions when monitors are unacceptable.
E. Other
· Assists Lab supervisor with the monitoring and collecting of data.
· Performs Quality Assurance reporting as assigned by Supervisor.
· Responsible for other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Director.
· Seeks out the necessary supervisory approval for all over time.
· Always adheres to infection control procedures
· Follows are departmental safety policies and reports safety hazards to the Lab Director.
· Attends OSHA, Biomedical Waste, and any other training as necessary.
· Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
· Recognizes and performs duties in an independent manner, without being instructed to do so. 10. Schedules vacation with Supervisor or Lab Director with 30 days advance notice.
