STATUS

Malahat Nation represents approximately 350+ members with two reserve lands located on the western shore of Saanich Inlet, south of the village of Mill Bay, about 40-kilometres north of Victoria, British Columbia. Malahat Nation has been dedicated to protecting and understanding the local marine environments since time immemorial and must be a part of building the understanding required to manage these valuable resources effectively. Malahat Nation is seeking a dedicated and hard-working Director of Marine Stewardship with experience working with Indigenous communities in Lands & Environment: Marine Stewardship initiatives. We are looking for fun, energetic, dependable and organized staff. Our staff are offered opportunities for professional growth and development.
PURPOSE: Reporting to the Director of Lands and Environment , the Director of Marine Stewardship will provide day-to-day oversight and management of the marine stewardship programs in a way that promotes community wellbeing, facilitates member access to traditional marine resources, and protects the long-term health of the environment. This position is a fulltime 1-year term backfill position with the possibility of an extension subject to review and reassessment thereafter, works in the office, with the possibility of a hybrid working arrangement and minimal local travel as required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience in the environmental field required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant technical experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a First Nations community and a willingness to learn about Malahat culture, customs, and traditions is an asset.
  • Relevant professional designations (e.g. RPBio or PMP), or ability to register an asset.
  • Criminal Record Check (CRC) required.
  • Valid BC Driver’s license and reliable vehicle required.
  • Effective December 3, 2021 full vaccination against COVID-19 is required to be eligible for employment at Malahat Nation. All individuals must show proof of vaccination as a mandatory condition of their employment

Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the Director of Lands and Environment, assist in directing, coordinating, and supervision of marine stewardship program staff to support their respective projects, professional growth, and progress towards meeting departmental objectives.
  • Direct the development of specialized monitoring and remediation projects for sensitive marine habitat features, shoreline erosion, oil spill response, underwater noise, habitat restoration, and other environmental processes.
  • Initiate and grow relationships with representatives of First Nations and stakeholders throughout the Salish Sea and across Canada. Develop meaningful connections resulting in collaborative relationships between organizations, including negotiation of new environmental processes.
  • Participate in technical working groups for conservation, resource management and marine use planning.
  • Provide advice and input into policies, frameworks, and protocols with influence on environmental health of Malahat natural resources and Malahat’s rights to hunt and fish as formerly.
  • Provide recommendations on the direction of mitigation, compensation, and enhancement projects.
  • Report regularly on program progress and goals in collaboration with project funders including governments and proponents.
  • Developing briefing notes, and present project updates, new environment programming opportunities and recommendations, at chief and council meetings.
  • Oversee and direct collection of data, data storage and data analysis across marine stewardship projects.
  • Lead presentations to collaborators, stakeholders, and the general public, on behalf of Malahat Nation.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Lands & Environment, support the long-term departmental planning through preparation and submission of funding applications, assist in hiring processes, and strategic planning sessions.
  • Provide internal financial management support to the marine stewardship team by monitoring expenditures across profit centers, to ensure appropriate financial practices within the department in accordance with Financial Administrative Law (FAL).
  • Complete yearly budget planning and quarterly check-ins for the marine stewardship profit centres in coordination with the Finance department.
