POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible to provide direct services to Xaa-wan’-k’wvt Early Learning Program (XELP) Head Start children through planning, promotion, and documentation of a safe healthy environment that meets or exceeds Head Start requirements and program performance standards.
All Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation employees must submit to a background check and abide by all Tribal, federal, and state laws. All employees must comply with Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation drug free workplace policy and will be subject to pre-employment, random, for-cause, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing. Current physical exam/tuberculosis test clearance, Hepatitis B series I, II, III complete. Qualified American Indian Preference applies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Submit monthly reports and paperwork to the Education Coordinator, weekly lesson plans (must be posted weekly), and attendance report as directed. Maintain current files on each child. Ensure all safety checklists are conducted upon opening and closing each day. Establish student-centered academic, social-emotional, and behavioral goals and objectives, as required by the Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Maintain constant and overall supervision of all children while in sessions and services.
  • Responsible for setting up an age-appropriate classroom that is neatly organized, a safe learning environment sanitized on a regular basis or as needed.
  • Responsible for completing pre-developmental and health screenings annually for each child. Complete developmental assessments three (3) times a year per each child. Utilize data to inform the individualization of lesson plans according to student goals. Screening and first developmental assessment shall be completed within 45 days of the child’s entry into the program.
  • Support the provision of comprehensive services, such as nutrition, mental health, dental health and family service activities into the curriculum.
  • Utilize Xaa-wan’-kwvt source of on-going assessment Teaching Strategies Gold/Creative Curriculum Profile to monitor individual child growth, progress and communicate with families. Integrate and support the Dee-ni’ Wee-ya’ (Tolowa language) and cultural lifeways into the curriculum to support language acquisition and the intergenerational transfer of knowledge.
  • Provide training/support to Teacher Assistant, and Classroom Aide in specific teaching strategies, child development concepts and activities, and positive behavioral intervention and support (PBIS).
  • Implement health and safety procedures as they pertain to diapering and potty-training children.
  • Conduct (2) home visits (1) parent teacher conferences each year, offsite for enrollment and others to keep parents informed of their child’s growth and development. Encourage parents during visits to volunteer and become involved whenever possible.
  • Must be willing and available to attend and participate in staff meetings, pre-service and in-service training courses, seminars, conferences, other programs and development-oriented activities either onsite or in other locations. This may include working evenings and/or weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:

All Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation employees are expected to have general knowledge of typical office technologies such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and typical office software.

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE IS LISTED BELOW:

Knowledge of Early Childhood Education.
Knowledge to facilitate groups of children ages 0-5.

  • Possess a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science (BA/BS) degree in child development, early childhood education, or equivalent coursework
  • One year of experience working with children up to 5 years of age.
  • CPR and First Aid within 60 days.
  • Mandated Reporter certification with 60 days.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license to drive agency vehicle(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Use hands and arms to operate office or field equipment.
  • Sit more than half the workday.
  • Stand and/or walk less than half the workday.
  • Bend, stretch, twist, crouch and/or reach
  • View electronic monitors for prolonged periods of time.
  • Use hands and arm for repetitive motion tasks consistently for more than one hour at a time.
