Part-Time / Contract Position

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic VEX V5RC Robotics Teacher & Competition Coach to teach robotics courses and support competitive VEX V5RC teams.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of robotics design, mechanical systems, programming, engineering principles, and the VEX Robotics Competition environment. This position combines curriculum development and classroom instruction with competition preparation, team coaching, and tournament support.

The teacher will help students progress from foundational robotics concepts to advanced competition-level design, programming, strategy, and engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Development & Teaching

  • Develop, improve, and deliver structured VEX V5RC robotics curriculum for students at different skill levels.
  • Teach students how to design, build, program, test, and improve VEX V5 robots.
  • Introduce engineering concepts including:
  • Mechanical design and mechanisms
  • Gear ratios, torque, speed, and power transmission
  • Drivetrain design
  • Intake, lifting, scoring, and other game mechanisms
  • Pneumatics
  • Sensors and control systems
  • Engineering design process
  • Teach VEX V5 programming using VEXcode, C++, Python, or other applicable programming environments.
  • Teach autonomous programming, driver-control programming, sensor integration, debugging, and code optimization.
  • Incorporate CAD, prototyping, design review, testing, and iteration into the curriculum.
  • Develop lesson plans, projects, challenges, assessments, and hands-on activities.
  • Adapt instruction based on students' ages, experience levels, and learning needs.
  • Monitor student progress and provide constructive feedback.

VEX Competition Coaching

  • Coach and mentor students participating in VEX V5 Robotics Competition (V5RC) events.
  • Study the current VEX game manual and ensure students understand competition rules, scoring, robot requirements, and inspection standards.
  • Guide students through the complete competition engineering process, including brainstorming, prototyping, building, programming, testing, data collection, and robot improvement.
  • Help teams analyze match performance and identify improvements between competitions.
  • Conduct mock matches, driver practice, autonomous testing, and competition simulations.
  • Prepare teams for robot inspection and ensure robots comply with applicable VEX rules.
  • Support students in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and programming problems during competition preparation.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of robotics, engineering, programming, or a related STEM field.
  • Hands-on experience with VEX V5/V5RC robotics is strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing, building, programming, or coaching competition robots.
  • Understanding of mechanical systems, motors, gears, sensors, pneumatics, and robot control systems.
  • Programming experience with C++, Python, VEXcode, PROS, or similar platforms is an asset.
  • CAD experience with Fusion 360, Onshape, SolidWorks, or similar software is an asset.
  • Previous VEX competition experience as a student, mentor, coach, volunteer, or judge is highly preferred.
  • Strong communication and classroom-management skills.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to students of different ages and experience levels.
  • Patient, responsible, organized, and enthusiastic about working with students.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends when required for practices and competitions.
