An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of this classification is to perform skilled technical work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment associated with the citywide Advanced Traffic Management System. The employee must possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities prior to assuming the position. Essential job functions include: installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal systems, including wiring, conduits, poles, heads controllers, switches, and other vehicle detectors, lighting and electricity or electronically controlled installations or systems; testing faulty equipment using specialized computer software and instruments such as volt-ohm meters, oscilloscopes, and signal tracing equipment; diagnosing the cause of equipment malfunctions; and repairing equipment by replacing defective components, rewiring or adjusting mechanical parts, following schematics and wiring diagrams, using electrical hand tools, etc. Additional duties include: modifying and testing controllers to achieve special operating conditions; documenting equipment changes on wiring and phase diagrams; acting as an inspector on traffic signal and lighting systems under contract; and performing clerical duties such as completing daily work orders, activity reports and logs, materials used, etc. The employee may conduct equipment maintenance and repair in the shop and/or at remote locations throughout the city. This classification has regular contact with other City employees, vendors, etc., to exchange work-related information and provide technical assistance. The employee frequently works independently following general verbal and written instructions.
