ABOUT US

The eLearning Technology Team is a unit within WTS providing Western faculty, staff, and students with the best possible resources to enable effective use of technology in teaching and learning. We believe in continual learning, and use ongoing research, testing, collaboration and training to develop and maintain a suite of technology tools that are leading edge and endeavour to engage our user community in the best use of these resources.
The eLearning Technology Team collaborates and works with the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) to ensure faculty are continuing to apply good pedagogical practices when incorporating technology in their teaching.
In 1994, Western established an Instructional Technology Resource Centre (ITRC). The Centre is staffed by a team of undergraduate students and its mandate is to assist Western’s faculty who wish to incorporate the use of technology in their course delivery. The Centre is highly regarded as a valuable resource for faculty. The eLearning Technology team manages the ITRC and provides the mentoring, guidance and leadership to the students who work in the Centre during their undergraduate studies at Western.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• Undergraduate Degree in a relevant field; major in Communications, Education, Computer Science or related technology or education fields is preferred

Experience:

• 3 years of experience supporting or administering LMS platforms (e.g., Brightspace, Sakai) and with implementing/piloting eLearning technologies
• Experience providing technical support and training in a higher education or similar environment
• Experience with system integrations and technical documentation and with web and multimedia tools (e.g., HTML/CSS, video editing, graphic design)
• Preferred:
• Experience leading cross-functional projects involving multiple stakeholders
• Familiarity with pedagogical frameworks and instructional design principles
• Previous work in an Instructional Technology Centre or similar academic support unit
• Experience conducting usability testing, data analysis, or user research to inform technology decisions

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• In-depth understanding of Learning Management Systems (LMS), particularly Brightspace and Sakai
• Knowledge of instructional design principles and pedagogical best practices in technology-enhanced learning
• Familiarity with eLearning tools and platforms, including virtual classrooms, content authoring tools, and multimedia applications
• Understanding of system integration, APIs, and data provisioning in educational technology environments
• Awareness of accessibility standards (e.g., AODA) and privacy/security policies in higher education
• Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools (e.g., Agile, Scrum, Trello, Jira)
• Technical troubleshooting and problem-solving in complex, multi-system environments
• System configuration and administration of LMS platforms and third-party integrations
• Data analysis and interpretation to inform decision-making and system improvements
• Documentation and workflow design, including technical writing and process mapping
• Presentation and facilitation skills for delivering training and outreach programs
• Collaboration and communication with diverse stakeholders including faculty, IT staff, and instructional designers
• Time and task management to independently prioritize and execute multiple concurrent projects
• Ability to translate pedagogical needs into technical solutions
• Ability to work independently and take initiative in ambiguous or evolving project environments
• Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and changing institutional priorities
• Ability to build relationships and foster collaboration across departments and functional teams
• Ability to balance technical depth with user-centered thinking, ensuring tools are both powerful and accessible
• Ability to evaluate and pilot emerging technologies with a critical and strategic lens

The eLearning Technology Specialist – Special Projects plays a pivotal role within the eLearning Technology Team, contributing technical expertise and strategic insight to high-impact initiatives that advance Western’s teaching and learning technologies. This role collaborates closely with eLearning Technology Specialists, Digital Media Specialists, and student Digital Media Designers, to support complex projects such as major platform transitions, pilot implementations, and LMS enhancements, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and pedagogical best practices.
