We mobilize individuals to inspire and engage in environmental citizenship. The Southern California Mountains Foundation supports youth development through conservation initiatives integrating environmental education, training and hands-on service projects; protects our natural resources through adult and family-led programming; and provides interpretive services that focus on outdoor recreation, responsible use, and stewardship of our natural environment. The Southern California Mountains Foundation is comprised of 30 full-time staff, 75-100 part-time employees and 750 volunteers. We achieve our mission through seven programs: (1) Urban Conservation Corps of the Inland Empire, (2) Big Bear Discovery Center, (3) Off-Highway Vehicles, (4) Fire Lookouts, (5) National Children’s Forest, (6) Music in the Mountains and (7) Big Bear Valley Trails. Introduction to the Urban Conservation Corps The Urban Conservation Corps of the Inland Empire (UCCIE) is a certified Local Conservation Corps founded in 2006 by the late Bobby Vega and Sandy Bonilla, out of a need to provide employment training to underserved transition age youth/young adults at risk of incarceration in the City of San Bernardino. The goal of the UCCIE is to provide at-risk transition age youth with opportunities to succeed through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community. The UCCIE is the largest program of the Southern California Mountains Foundation with three main focus areas; (1) recycling service, (2) conservation services and (3) corpsmember development with an on-site John Muir charter school. The UCCIE has an annual budget of 3.5 million, and is primarily funded by a variety of government grants, corporate and foundation grants, and fee for service projects. The UCCIE department has 15 full time staff that hire and train 50-60 young adult corpsmembers annually to work on conservation and recycling projects in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Position Summary The Controller is a key member of the Southern California Mountains Foundation’s leadership team and is responsible for the overall management of accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, HR/payroll administration, internal controls, and compliance. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information and supports strategic decision-making for the organization’s mission. The Controller leads a four-person team, fosters a culture of accountability and service, and ensures that financial and HR processes align with nonprofit best practices. Key Responsibilities Financial Management and Reporting Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, cash management, and grant accounting Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards. Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and provide financial insights to leadership and program managers. Coordinate annual audit and Form 990 preparation; serve as primary liaison with external auditors. Maintain and improve internal controls, financial policies, and procedures. HR & Payroll Oversight Manage HR/payroll processes, ensuring accurate and compliant payroll cycles, employee records, and benefits administration. Oversee administration of benefits programs, leave tracking, and employee onboarding/offboarding. Support compliance with federal and state labor laws, nonprofit employment regulations, and organizational personnel policies. Partner with leadership on HR initiatives, including compensation reviews, performance management cycles, and staff training needs. Ensure sensitive HR data is handled with strict confidentiality and secure recordkeeping practices. Team Leadership & Development Supervise a team of four professionals across accounting and HR/payroll functions. Provide coaching, mentorship, regular performance feedback, and opportunities for professional growth. Establish clear priorities, workflows, and deadlines to support smooth and accurate team operations. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-aligned team culture. Budgeting & Strategic Support Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes; collaborate with program leaders to track grant budgets and restricted funds. Provide financial analysis to inform organizational strategy, program planning, and fundraising initiatives. Assist leadership with scenario modeling, cash flow planning, and long-term financial sustainability planning Serve as a strategic financial advisor to leadership and the Board Finance Committee. Support technology and systems improvements to enhance financial efficiency. Compliance & Risk Management Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, grant requirements, HR regulations, and internal policies.
