· Identify and highlight any potential clinical risks, comorbidities, or contraindications that may impact surgical safety.
· Escalate concerns or recommend further investigations where appropriate, ensuring safe decision-making.
· Provide sign-off for patients deemed fit and ready to proceed to surgery.
Pre-Operative Pathway Oversight
· Ensure that all required pre-operative assessments and diagnostic investigations are completed in a timely manner.
· Verify that necessary external reports (e.g., GP letters, specialist opinions, cardiology/respiratory investigations, imaging) are obtained, reviewed, and filed prior to surgery.
· Confirm that blood tests, MRSA screening, and any other required results are available and acted upon before the surgical date.
Clinical Communication & Collaboration
· Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, and nursing teams to ensure alignment on patient readiness and clinical pathways.
· Liaise with external healthcare providers and specialists to obtain additional information when required.
· Provide clear, evidence-based recommendations to the wider clinical team on patient suitability and perioperative risk management.
Patient Interaction & Support
· Act as a point of escalation for patient queries, providing clinical guidance, reassurance, and clarification when contacted via the Surgery Support Team or Patient Aftercare team.
· Support patients in understanding any additional requirements for surgery, such as further investigations or optimising existing health conditions before admission.
Clinical Governance & Safety
· Maintain accurate, detailed documentation of all clinical decisions, sign-offs, and risk assessments.
· Contribute to continuous quality improvement by identifying recurrent issues or process gaps within the surgical pathway.
· Ensure adherence to clinical policies, best practice guidelines, and relevant regulatory standards.
Key Skills & Attributes
· Strong clinical judgement with the ability to assess complex medical information and make safe, evidence-based decisions.
· Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with patients and clinical colleagues.
· Organised and detail-oriented, ensuring thorough review and follow-up of all pre-operative requirements.
· Collaborative mindset, working across multi-disciplinary teams to support safe surgical pathways.
· Commitment to patient safety, clinical governance, and best practice in perioperative care.
Qualifications & Experience
· GMC registration or PIN
· Previous experience in perioperative medicine, anaesthesia, general practice, or hospital medicine desirable.
· Experience in patient risk assessment, surgical suitability reviews, or pre-operative assessment advantageous.
