JOB INFORMATION

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Mental Health Counsellor to join our Community Counselling Services team in Fort Smith. This role provides a full spectrum of mental health services to individuals, families, and groups, supporting wellness across the lifespan.

  • Key Duties:
  • Deliver counselling using evidence-based approaches (e.g., CBT, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, play/art therapy).
  • Coordinate care with other professionals and make referrals as needed.
  • Respond to crises, including suicide risk assessments and mental health emergencies.
  • Conduct assessments, including suicide risk screening and assessment, homicide risk assessment, and mental status exams.
  • Provide aftercare and follow-up support, including discharge planning following facility-based treatment.
  • Lead case management and coordinate care with professionals, traditional healers, and service providers.
  • Maintain clinical documentation and evaluate intervention outcomes.
  • Facilitate workshops and training to raise awareness of mental health, addictions, and family violence.
  • Respond to crises and provide assessments and care recommendations.
  • Participate in emergency support, including psychiatric escort duties.

    • KEY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Counselling, Psychology, Clinical Social Work or a related discipline with a focus on Therapeutic counselling.AND One (1) year of relevant therapeutic counselling experience in a scope of practice,
  • OR One (1) year experience in addictions, mental health and family violence..
  • The experience of the Mental Health and Addiction Counsellor should include clinically supervised education or work experience that includes at least 500 hours, where at least 120 of these hours are direct client contact. Additional hours are spent in face-to-face supervision, educational activities, documentation activities and professional development.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be eligible to register as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association
Must hold a valid class 5 driver’s license
Must be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check with the RCMP
Knowledge of Indigenous cultures and trauma-informed care is an asset.
