Overview and Responsibilities English teacher in a new SEN provision Location: Horsham, West Sussex Contract Type: Permanent, full-time Hours: 40 Hours per week Annual salary: £32,916 - £49,232 (M1 – UPS2)* Start Date: January 2026 (negotiable) Aurora Vincent House School We have recently opened a new SEND Secondary School in the heart of Horsham, West Sussex for young autistic people aged 11-16. Most of our students are coming to us from mainstream education to have access to an adapted National Curriculum delivered in small classes with a focus on meeting their sensory needs and support for their emotional wellbeing. The Role: We are looking for an English teacher who believes that every child, whatever their background or level of literacy, can learn to love language and literature. Our English teacher will be responsible for developing the curriculum to meet the needs of our wonderful young people, ensuring that their basic literacy skills are developed alongside building up enjoyment and engagement with books, plays, poetry and other creative activities. We offer a range of qualifications, including Functional Skills and Entry Level, and experience with GCSE level courses is vital to this role. You will be teaching a small, engaged cohort of students with a range of literacy need, including dyslexia, so creativity and flexibility in your approach will be essential. Experience of designing schemes of learning, scaffolding and enrichment activities for young people with autism and dyslexia is desirable. Alongside teaching English, you will be supporting a tutor group and teaching them PSHE and Life Skills. An interest in wider, holistic approaches to education is essential to this role. Please see below for the full job description: Job Description – English Teacher Skills and Qualifications Successful candidates are likely to demonstrate: They have successfully supported neurodivergent students in a teaching role Resourcefulness, resilience and a growth mindset An ability to plan personalised learning Experience as a form tutor It is also preferable for candidates to have experience: of teaching in a SEND provision or working collaboratively with a SENDCO in pastoral support to students with high anxiety working with students aged 11-16 Candidates must: be a qualified English teacher have a passion to work in SEND and willingness to keep learning be outstanding in their pastoral and safeguarding practice believe in an integrated therapeutic approach be committed to becoming a neuro-informed and neuro-affirmative practitioner have the empathy and resilience to work with young people who may experience high anxiety and may have self-harming behaviours, ARFID and disordered eating, and a range of mental health difficulties.
