In the past few years Mistwood Golf Club has expanded into a hospitality company. Not only does the company manage a high-end, semi-private golf course, but also three restaurants (McWethy’s Tavern, McWethy’s Sports Bar, The James), two banquet facilities (The Great Hall at Mistwood and the Grand Ballroom at Joliet Union Station) and a sports dome (Mistwood Golf Dome). While each property is a different concept, they share one important characteristic: each is an exciting place where enthusiastic people come together to create a special experience.
Yes, there are certain requirements. We are looking for somebody who has experience operating and managing a kitchen in the hospitality industry and has experience leading a culinary team. The Assistant General Manager at The James is considered a full-time position that will demand full-time hours. The Assistant General Manager will report directly to The James General Manager. The Assistant General Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business, including making sure the premises are maintained in proper operating condition and that the operation runs smoothly. Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the establishment, promotion, and protection of The James brand.
  • Communicating continually with The James management team, Director of Food & Beverage, and Chef team to ensure operational flow.
  • Working with the General Manager to conduct interviews and selectively hire wait staff, bartenders and support staff who are committed to representing The James in a positive manner.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure the best possible guest experience. Ensuring show quality standards are always maintained.
  • Training, developing, overseeing, and assisting the staff to ensure positive interactions take place between staff and guests. Continually assessing and retraining existing employees to deliver great guest service.
  • Managing the individual needs of the employees, making sure they have the proper tools to complete their job, and continually monitoring morale.
  • Scheduling staff to ensure demands are met and providing cover for staff during absence or illness–oftentimes at short notice.
  • Developing and implementing procedures for the food and beverage operation, including staff procedures.
  • Strong understanding of wine, including wine service, varietals, regions, etc.
  • Strong understanding of spirits, hand-crafted cocktails, mixology, etc.
  • Assisting in placing liquor orders and managing inventory and supplies.
  • Working with the General Manager to maintain relationships with vendors to stay current with product trends, and to secure the best products available at the best prices available.
  • Ensuring the general coordination between the kitchen and FOH staff to ensure proper service levels are maintained.
  • Ensuring the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities and ensuring that all health and safety regulations are satisfied.
  • Assisting in developing marketing strategies and working with the Marketing Department to implement advertising and promotional campaigns to increase business levels.
  • Managing the timely reconciliation of daily reports, payroll records, and other accounting reports integral to operating the business.
  • Ensures that all security, safety, and sanitation standards are achieved.
  • Follows and enforces responsible alcohol service practices.
  • Monitoring inventory control measures and continually assessing their effectiveness.
  • Thoroughly and accurately uses applicable POS system and technology.
  • Achieves daily sales, assigned cost and budget goals.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure the best possible guest experience. Ensuring show quality standards are always maintained.
  • Follows and enforces responsible alcohol service practices.
  • Personally, managing guest complaints and compliments in a way that reflects positively on The James.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Managerial Food Safety and Sanitation certification as required by the state of Illinois.
  • Food Handler certification as required by the state of Illinois.
  • Food Allergen certification as required by the state of Illinois.
  • Sexual Harassment certification as required by the state of Illinois.
  • BASSET and/or TIPS Responsible Alcohol certification as required by the state of Illinois.
  • Ability to taste and evaluate food and beverage products.
  • English reading, writing, math, and computer skills required.
  • Stamina to work 50+ hours or more per week or as business dictates.
  • Must be able to work extended shifts of 8+ hours or more as business dictates.
  • Must be flexible with schedule and able to work different shifts, including day shifts, night shifts, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Possible job hazards include, but not limited to, slips, trips, falls, burns, cuts and strains.
  • Must be able to reach, lift, stoop, bend and perform extensive standing and walking (including stairs) throughout the shift.
  • Ability to use hands in using office equipment, including the computer system.
  • Ability to talk and hear to conduct phone correspondence.
  • Acting as a role model for the staff.
