Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
Cellular Pathology invites applications for the post of Senior Healthcare Scientist – (Specimen Dissection / Cut-up, Specimen Reception & Referrals) to join our friendly forward-thinking team within a busy and continually developing department.
The primary responsibility of this role will be to manage & oversee specimen dissection / cut-up, specimen reception & our referrals pathway within the histopathology laboratory.
This post is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and suitably experienced individual to contribute to a rapidly developing specimen
dissection service. The post also presents opportunity for personal development, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is actively
supported. The laboratory is IBMS approved for training and is UKAS accredited.
University Hospital Southampton is one of England’s largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.
Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.
We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
At UHS we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.
At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.
The Cellular Pathology service operates a 6-day week service (Monday to Saturday) between the hours of 06:00 - 19:00, and includes working on selected Bank Holidays.
Cellular Pathology includes Neuropathology, Paediatric pathology, Immunohistochemistry, Digital Pathology, Research Histology and also incorporates the departments of Diagnostic Cytology, Biomedical Imaging and provision of Mortuary services to the hospital, City Council and local Coroners. There is also a dedicated suite to support the delivery of the Mohs service within the Trust
The department is integrated with the University of Southampton’s department of pathology which has a major role in medical student education
and has active research programs in both applied and basic experimental pathology.

Approximately 52,000 histology specimens and 3,000 diagnostic cytology samples are currently received and processed annually.

  • You will be responsible for leading the specimen reception, cut up & referral pathways within the department.
  • In conjunction with the Specimen Dissection Operation Lead and Senior Lead in Cut-up, the post holder will participate in the strategic development of the sections and in staff training and development.
  • You will ensure that UKAS standards within own area of responsibility are maintained, including the preparation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and training documentation.
  • You will need to be an excellent communicator & be able to work effectively as part of large team.
  • You will need to be able to prioritise workload & adjust to accommodate unexpected events &/or changes in demands.
  • The Cellular Pathology service operates a 6-day week service (Monday to Saturday) between the hours of 06:00 - 19:00, and includes working on selected Bank Holidays which requires a flexible approach to the hours of employment.
  • You will need to be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist.
